Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

A little bit of excitement from last night. The northern lights very rarely ever make it down into central California. Had to go out and see what I could capture.

The soft pedaling language being used to describe the men in the Epstein files is enraging.

They didn’t “have sex with underage girls”.

They raped them.

Sex implies consent.

The survivors deserve better than this. Use the correct language. Say what these men did.

Had the opportunity to gently steer a dad-in-law away from the AI Overview in search today. He wasn’t aware that AI was embedded in search, assuming the summary to be a (trusted) result. It was an illuminating interaction that led to a small intervention in critical digital literacy about genAI.

Someone has "re-googled" the fire hydrants in my neighborhood (it was done once a long time ago, before my time with only one still googled) recently and no one will fess up to it. I have been asking lots of people and they mostly say "I thought YOU did it!" #vermont

I’ve seen so many people spreading the misinformation that PBS is shut down or is shutting down.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been shut down and PBS has been defunded.

HOWEVER!!! PBS still exists. It is more important now than ever that you donate to PBS if you can.

The state of Florida came in overnight and painted over the Pulse Memorial site crosswalk in Orlando. This crosswalk abided by the state’s laws and was originally installed by them. To be clear, the state surreptitiously painted over this memorial at night against the city’s wishes. Cowards.

We are at a red-alert moment with queer stories right now. Literally this morning, I was chatting with a seasoned Hollywood producer who just had a project halted b/c executives were skittish about it being too gay. Not only is a mass-erasure of queer characters plausible... it's already begun.
I hope there's a course correction, but it's incredibly plausible that Hollywood's desire to not offend reactionaries ends up costing us 20-ish years of more diverse stories, roughly akin to the comparative drought of POC and queer stories in the '80s and '90s when compared to the '70s.
I'm no longer shocked when the truths come out but my heart still breaks every time. Queer youth are attacked at every turn and they can’t even have the respite of feeling seen by a movie, all so regressive bigots don’t have to feel discomfort for two hours.

We must stop using the term “hallucinate” for software that doesn’t think. It doesn’t deal with information; it deals in text. It’s a bullshit generator. Using “AI”, “hallucinate”, and other terms that anthropomorphize it is compounding the general population’s misunderstanding of what it is.
