A couple years ago on the last day of school my neighbor had a bunch of her friends over playing badminton in the street and it was loud. I closed my window and let them be.
Kid just got home from school covered in snow:

“We had the best time pushing eachother into snowbanks, so much fun - then some lady yelled at us for being too loud.”

Our world hates kids being outside.

One of the Seattle middle schools where students had to shelter in place today because of ICE activity is named after a US citizen of Japanese descent who was sent to the Minidoka concentration camp as a teenager.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best antidote to doom and despair is getting out in your community if you are able to and working towards something positive. Not everything has to be about fighting fascism directly. Simply building better and stronger communities is a worthy endeavor.

Context is US courts have ruled that standards organizations like the ICC lose their copyright on codes and standards once they are adopted into law, under the logic that you cannot copyright the law. ICC and others are trying to change that with the Pro Codes Act, which might make UpCodes illegal.
Congrats to ICC on another record revenue year. 🤑

More proof that you don't need a monopoly on the law itself to be extremely profitable. 😌

If you are visiting here from X because the CSAM thing was a bridge too far, welcome.

I'd encourage you to carefully consider whether the things you heard about Bluesky on X are true or whether they were lies spread by the guy who owns X who controls what posts you see on his site.

Had a mini panic attack as I couldn’t remember whether I’d finished mine for the year.

I’m good.

For anyone that gets that disorienting feeling of not knowing what day it is between Xmas and New Years and having very few obligations and things to do - that’s called being relaxed.

N+1 bike alert!

I got the green light to buy a MTB for my Christmas present, but I’m not really sure where to start. Last time I went mountain biking was almost 15 years ago on a Raleigh M40 hardtail. Probably very underbiked for what I was riding (mostly single track on Moscow Mtn).

Finally getting around to working on some language for sustainable design criteria I've been too busy to work on the past 6 months.

I'm begging jurisdictions to stop creating programs that amount to arbitrary or capricious requirements that do very little to improve your building's sustainability.

People's safety is a higher priority than creditors' balance sheets. Rad's filing lists $32.1 million in assets. Compensating customers who were sold unsafe batteries needs to come first, then the creditors can recover what's left.

It all would have been much easier if, as would have happened if we were remotely a serious country, it all ended with the Access Hollywood interview.

I was flipping through this book the other day, and while it’s awesome, it also felt in a weird way like a missed opportunity—so for no reason at all here’s a (probably long) thread on plant morphology:
