Sigh.

Squicky people on the internet are at it again about the alleged old days of teen and tween brides, so this is my cue to bring out the graph showing that the median age for first marriage in the US has never been below 20 for the woman from 1890 to the present.

I'd noticed before that he always needlessly prefaces any mentions of babies and girls with beautiful.

like with the two doll thing I distinctly remember he said: "a beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old" doesnt need 20 or 30 dolls. So...specific.

Millions of memecoins flooded the market last year. In search of riches, coin creators began to take ever more outlandish, dangerous, and degrading measures to attract attention.

Here, I spoke to a dad whose child made $50,000 in minutes dumping coins he created:

A Kid Made $50,000 Dumping Crypto He’d Created. Then Came the Backlash
In less than 10 minutes, a US teen made a small fortune selling off a memecoin he’d made on a lark. Traders, feeling swindled, sought revenge.

Trump’s tariffs on Brazil aren’t about trade, writes Tech Policy Press fellow Laís Martins. His real target? Brazil’s effort to hold its former president to account and its tough stance on American tech firms in defense of its own sovereignty, she writes.

Few other countries have fought back against repeated attacks on their sovereignty like Brazil, writes Tech Policy Press fellow Laís Martins.

Can ChatGPT change your mind? I wrote for @techpolicypress.bsky.social about what we find + where AI persuasion research should go from here:

How will trust in AI evolve? What can it really persuade us on? Will it reach resistant audiences?
Can conversations with ChatGPT reduce confidence in false beliefs held by both Democrats and Republicans? A new wave of research is exploring the persuasive potential of generative artificial intelligence platforms, Natasha Goel writes.

My new piece on accelerationism as the core strategy of technofascism.

Technoaccelerationism is the rapid progress of technology in order to drive social regression. They see AI as the key to breaking societal commitments to equity and human freedom.
Data & Society’s Jacob Metcalf writes that whenever you hear someone advocating for acceleration, you should ask: accelerating toward what? Today’s techno-accelerationists aim to undo generations of slow, arduous progress toward social, political, and economic equality, he says.

Jacob Metcalf says the alliance between the American far right and the tech oligarchy is driven by a shared commitment to accelerationism.

I don't know if I can explain this well. Country conservative people work long hours and watch the local TV news. More TV and YouTube ads are needed to explain what is happening, why it is unconstitutional. Why it is a crime, why we don't have enough money.

Even if these things were 100% accurate, not built on stolen IP, and not an environmental disaster, not know their rules they follow, the biases built into them, we would be right to avoid the damned things.
Myth-making is a crucial aspect of the AI industry, and ‘black boxes’ are woven into the stories its leaders tell, writes Tech Policy Press fellow Eryk Salvaggio. The problem is that those of us outside of the AI industry don’t know what rules they are following. That’s a policy decision, he writes.
