Lord God, we pray your mercy over the victims of political violence, especially the four high schoolers in Colorado and seventy-two dead in Gaza today, who die because of the callousness of American politicians and pundits who make their living by advocating for the death of the vulnerable. Amen.

At least by calling it the Department of War, Trump is being honest about what it is. America, like every empire, is built on the back of invasion, devastation, and murder. "Defense" is an obfuscation to mitigate the evil we all support with our taxes and complicity.

I think that modern Christianity is functionally Pelagian while desperately claiming to be Augustinian. And that's not really a bad thing imho. It is better for the kingdom of God to think we can make a difference to what happens in the world than not, even if it is ultimately only ever God moving.
