Habitat Dependency Index: our recent paper outlines a new method to quantify and contrast how much individual species in a community depend on their habitat. Extensive examples with #kelp forest species. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... @uwaoceans.bsky.social

More but smaller: our new paper show how historical #overfishing and contemporary #marineheatwaves combine to exacerbate the truncation of fish sizes in kelp forests

The Great southern reef is within 50km of most Australians
Australians know the Great Barrier Reef, but fewer are aware of the Great Southern Reef. Yet 70 percent of our population lives within 50km of it.

With #kelpforests in many places declining 1-2%/year, the current rate of #restoration is far from matching the rate of degradation.

“It would be much cheaper and by far more efficient to avoid loss to start with” explained @twernberg.bsky.social

“Our shared scientific fascination with the #GreatSouthernReef has grown over decades, yet we've often operated in isolation," @twernberg.bsky.social reflects. "Now, through the GSR Research Partnership, we can unite our collaborative efforts and that is the exciting momentum we need.”

Congrats Graeme, well deserved!! Often forgotten that even those that seem to win usually have many (!!) more rejections that no one ever hears about.

Golden #kelp Ecklonia radiata and some associated fauna, Jurien Bay, Western Australia, for #phycologyfriday. Our golden kelp is warm tolerant but has suffered extensive decline due an extreme #marineheatwave @uwaoceans.bsky.social @greatsouthernreef.bsky.social

Impressed by the many delegates, pavilions, events and ways that people engage - but not impressed by how little we have moved forward towards limiting climate change.

Amazing field work diving at long-term #kelp sites in Jurien Bay with 3 ‘generations’ of my PhD students. Feel so privileged to work with such outstanding humans and in such a unique environment! #uwa
