Difficult to put into words how devastating this is for environmental and public health protection. We will be less safe, more at risk, and our environment will be far more polluted and degraded because of this.

The Trump admin wants to cut the NSF's budget by 57%.

In terms of directorates, EDU and ENG would see the biggest cuts at 75%, while MPS is looking at a ~67% cut. The proposal also defunds nearly all postdoc programs and slashes the NSF GRFP budget by 55%.

This is a very interesting article, worth the read. I've noted a large decrease in insects over my lifetime, but I thought it was just local pollution/pesticides. Their sensitivity to water and heat stress is a big concern for even relatively 'untouched' ecosystems.

This tracks. Normally we aim for a class of 10-15 in physics and astro at U Oregon, and admit 30-40 to get there. This year we admitted SIX because we couldn’t have a larger class, and admitted one at a time off the wait list to reach that number.

Next year is unlikely to be better. 😣
