4% of attendants at COP30 are fossil fuel industry lobbyists. 1600 people that are doing nothing but trying to ruin the climate.

The gloves have to come off with regards to lobbying, because this is ridiculous.

And this is exactly the reason to be concerned about these kind of systems.

Coders implementing the Palantir systems for Swedish police. Began with preventing terror - ended up with bicycle thefts.

Unless these systems are locked down in the extreme, this is what happens.

Who's responsible for this turd proposal?

@europarl.europa.eu @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu - Are you aware of this? The GDPR is a *strength* we have in EU. Watering it down, only benefiting big US tech companies, is hole-in-the-head idiocy.

The EU Commission has secretly set in motion a potentially massive reform of the GDPR. noybs first overview of the proposed changes.

In lieu of what is going on in the USA, have a listen to this song,

and pay special attention to the lyrics. Yeah, it might not be your cup of tea music-wise, but you might nod both agreement and recognition at the lyrics.

You need another 1776.

Clean slate, start from scratch, learn from old mistakes.

And set things up so that it is so hard gaming the system that they won't even try.
I keep seeing regular Americans taking more risks every day to fight tyranny, want, and cynicism than I see from the opposition party, and I imagine many of those regular Americans are asking themselves what the value proposition of such an opposition party is, really

Politics in USA has several flaws.

Electoral College is one. I get why founding fathers put it there, but since WW2, that reason is gone.

Citizens United is another. Spectacular own goal.

But the biggest issue is the two party system. And I'll give my thoughts on why.
To repeat: I have studied a lot of cases of autocratization over the past 15 years. Wrote about them, taught about them, consulting about them.

I do not recall an opposition so apathetic, ignorant, and inept as the @democrats.org. They cling to their power, rather than fight for democracy. Shame.

Bang on the money.

Read and reflect. If you struggle with this concept, you have issues. Truman put it very succinctly in four short, easily understood, sentences.
Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

This is just it.

Usaian politics have drifted so far right that it hasn't had a common frame of reference with Europe since Thatcher.

What is being touted as "communist", "leftist" or "progressive/woke" in USA is just run of the mill centrist policies in Europe.

Which god? There's at least 3,000 to pick from you absolute cretin. What makes you so sure you've picked the "right" one out of all of them - you are way more likely to have backed the wrong horse than the "right" one.

And that's "just" the statistics angle.

Tried out an "old" game today. Warframe. And it's great. Sure, it's online, but it is mostly single-player and maybe co-op if you want. And that suits me just fine.

Got to figure out the key combos though. I'm a little haphazard at the moment, not two hours into it. 😁

AI summaries has got to be one of the biggest concerns about professional AI use:

1) people love summaries and will assume accuracy;

2) AI summaries often look authoritative (even citing sources);

3) if you take time to check the sources, they often don’t say what AI says in the summary
@williamlidc.bsky.social and I were JUST TALKING ABOUT THIS
#LegalEthics Tidbit: OK, #AI is not reliable for legal research. But it’s really good at accurately summarizing documents, right? RIGHT!?

The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased.

Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power.

Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable.

But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless.

Remember this.

It's interesting how the media are so quick to use negative connotation words like "leftist" or "socialist" about Mamdani, when his policies and approach is to make life better for everyone.

Socialism is really simple:

For everyone according to need,
from everyone according to capacity.

This is true, not just in the USA, but perhaps most true there.

Boomers need to gracefully step aside, and as Gen X just don't give a fuck, let Gen Y and Gen Z step in and take the reigns.

A clean break has risks, however, it clears out corruption as well.
We need a new generation of leaders who are the voices of democracy, freedom, social justice, & the rule of law.

A new generation that renews the “we” in “we the people.”

Instead of fretting over Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party should embrace him as part of its future.

Turns out, being young (relatively), fresh and untainted of the political corruption can be a winning recipe.

That it's 25th amendment territory goes without saying. The reason the GOP don't exercise the 25th is because they are afraid it'll hand momentum to someone other than the GOP.

Trump is a total embarrassment. The ignorance, the malice, the venal corruption, all on global display.
The president of the United States thinks asylum-seekers come from mental asylums.

He says it in almost every interview where the topic of migration comes up.

How is this not 25th Amendment territory? How is he not an embarrassment to this entire country?

There's an argument to be made that you're already there and the warning about where things was heading was eight months ago.

Pinochet is a good comparison, Franco is another.

Biggest problem? Half the country actively want it, because they think they're immune and it'll hurt brown people.
Everyone who follows the news already knows where this is headed.

Orwell. A police state. An authoritarian regime that disappears people—including citizens. Think Pinochet as a starting point.

The problem is that those who don't follow the news *don't* know where this is headed. We must tell them.
