Happy new year to everyone but Kim Reynolds who per Laura chose today for this election. When will they learn?
Polls closed a few minutes ago and Democrat Renee Hardman has 73% of the vote in Iowa Senate district 16. Only a few precincts not counted.
Republicans will not win back their super majority.
December 31, 2025 at 2:38 AM
And Republicans lose their ability to confirm Gov Reynolds appointees. Feeling like it wont be the last loss of the cycle
Looks like most of the vote is in for the Iowa #SD16 (Harris+17) special election:

Renee Hardman (D)- 73.3%
Lucas Loftin (R)- 26.7%

Nearly a 30 point overperformance to cap off an amazing 2025 for the Iowa Democrats
December 31, 2025 at 2:29 AM
The woman on the right just turned in a 30 pt overperformance to be the first Black woman in the Iowa State Senate! That's
a lot even for Iowa!
Today is a great day to elect Renee Hardman!

Polls are open until 8 PM, so make sure to cast your ballot to prevent a GOP supermajority and elect a real working class candidate and champion like Renee!

Once again , if these are your tactics you are headed for a loss
The Utah GOP is having to trick people into signing the Independent Redistricting Repeal Referendum sometimes borderline harassing voters

Was thinking exactly this. And that my 10 year old would be rocking out to him (though even more to Huntrix of course)
I'd love to try to explain to 20-year-old-me in 1993 how Snoop Doggy Dogg became a universally beloved elder statesman who'd be the centerpiece of a Super Bowl-level halftime show in 2025.

Whoa Adam really is my Santa Claus
On this Christmas Day, on the 248th anniversary of Washington's Crossing the Delaware (from Washington Crossing, PA, go figure!), my annual reminder that the Hessians were not drunk that night—this false claim was just blame-shifting from the British troops.

Happy New year!
And for you true sickos, we are finally unveiling the "2026" tab for our Big Board, because there are *five* special elections taking place on Jan. 6!

Notably, there's one in an R-held SC district that was just Trump+7 last year, per our calculations. Feast away!

I know this is all a sign of how successful No Kings has been but geez do not do this
Hi folks. Just to be clear, a date has not yet been announced for the next No Kings. If a PAC you’ve never heard of asks for donations to “organize” it, please block and report them

Yeah the utter low stakes for me, (will my friends come over to watch Muppet Xmas carol for the 4th straight year?) combined with huge pressure on many of my neighbors is a true delight
I know many Jews have complicated feelings about Christmas but I will say that I absolutely love a holiday in which everything around me is festive and yet there are zero societal explanations placed on me personally to do *anything* and also there's possibly dim sum

Why just give 1 senate seat away when you can light it on fire and chuck it off a cliff?
Morrow, who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, called public schools "indoctrination centers," called for Donald Trump to use the military to remain in power, and made a "joke" about executing Barack Obama. She spent campaign for state superintendent firing off homophobic rhetoric. She narrowly lost.
BREAKING: Former NC superintendent candidate Michele Morrow is running for U.S. Senate, where she'll square off against former NCGOP Chairman Michael Whatley. #ncpol

I can only speak for the Jews when I say bigots hate us and I welcome their hatred
there's a set of folks in the Republican party who seem to believe they can hold the line against anti-Indian racism and antisemitism while engaging in a free-for-all hatefest against Haitian, Somalian, and Muslim immigrants and...that's just not how it works, guys www.nytimes.com/2025/12/17/o...

Oh yeah we aren’t quite done yet , the last special is appropriately in the Iowa Senate !
The seat was also one of the final two races left on my guides of elections to watch in December.

(The final one is on December 30, somehow!)

More here: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the...

But here's more from @the-downballot.com on the GOP nominee today:
There's a special election tonight for the KY Senate in a seat that Harris won by just 5 points last year, but the GOP doesn't seem to be contesting it seriously.

One possible reason? Their candidate called young women “coddled americunts."

Paul would have definitely wanted good natured booing of political opponents at his funeral!
I'm old enough to remember Paul Wellstone's death, and how Republicans led the dumbest pundit dickheads in a round of schoolmarm scolding after liberals celebrated Paul's life in partisan terms. All I can say is: Get over it. This is how we should pay respects to one of our own: Partisan as fuck.

Behold the almost final 2025 Big Board . I remember when the overperformance reached 13 pts and I thought well there might be some outliers there.. it’s up to 13.7%
It appears that vote-counting may be done in KY. If so, it's an astounding *42-point* overperformance for Democrat Gary Clemons, a union leader and Army vet. This district moved to the right last year, from Biden+10 to Harris+5, but the GOP never seriously contested it.

I feel like this is a seat that Mirror Universe Republicans would be contesting hard and instead they absolutely surrendered their incel posting boy and left him to a 42 pt drubbing
A quite startling overperformance for Democrats in tonight's special election for a state Senate seat in Kentucky:

Democrat Gary Clemons won 72% to 25%.

He was defending a Dem-held seat where Kamala Harris beat Trump by 5% last year.

Would subscribe to a newsletter that’s just Stephen Miller’s family calling him out
Stephen Miller's cousin unloads on him:

“We’re Jewish—we grew up knowing how hated we were just for existing. Now he’s trying to take away the exact thing his own family benefited from: that ability to prosper, to build community, to live a rewarding life.”

“Wake up dead man” is actually what Falvey cries when he’s approaching the Pohlads to ask for payroll.
Look closely at the TV and you can see Willi Castro and the Twins make a cameo appearance in "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery."

(And coincidentally, the dialogue describes what it can often feel like to be a Twins fan.)

Now, its Hanukkah! Your yearly reminder that everyone is just doing what they can to bring light, from the Maccabees who thought they were celebrating Sukkot in Kislev/ December, to the Italians who invented latkes (using ricotta), to us with our Beernukiyah (non-alcoholic this year). Let it shine !
December 14, 2025 at 11:53 PM
Happy Hanukkah! As since its inception there are clearly huge struggles within and without for Jewish people and questions of who we should ally ourselves with, but I hope the video of an unarmed Muslim father of two saving lives make that question a little easier. Here is a little more joy
December 14, 2025 at 5:13 PM
Happy Hanukkah to all but especially Ahmed Al Ahmed, his children, and Brad Lander for making sure we knew this
Extraordinary courage from Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim, 43-year-old father of two, who bravely risked his life to save his neighbors celebrating Hanukkah.

Praying for his full & speedy recovery.

And so deeply inspired by his example.
