"I should be allowed to kill the people who annoy me" is the most foundational belief in the reactionary American mind. There are a LOT of right-wingers celebrating Mangione and Penny because they hate healthcare bills and homeless people. You're not gonna build M4A out of that, sorry.
The elite handwringing over the folk heroization of Luigi Mangione is especially hollow given their own heroization of Daniel Penny
Getting the full Rittenhouse.

frankly, penny, rittenhouse, trump, and mangiano all reflect the roiling populism in the american psyche. people want some macho heroes--left and right. the actual policy takes second place to the aesthetic

“blm era is over” is just explicit support of white supremacy
In right-wing media, the Daniel Penny verdict isn’t just being celebrated as righteous vigilantism, but evidence that their views on racism and patriarchy have won. Megyn Kelly says it means “the BLM era is officially over”; Batya Ungar-Sargon says it’s the end of “the criminalization of masculinity”

people don’t want cyberpunk, they want to live in hong kong in the 80s
america but cyberpunk is just america but poorer and more corrupt. not “oriental neon urban metropolis.”

it’s also that they tend to be annoyed by their younger coworkers and interns who are to their left, and therefore see right-wingers as kindered spirits
amazing that packer wrote this about an election result in which no one got above 50% of the vote.

the thing you have to understand about the commentary class is that many of them are embarrassed elites who are overly credulous toward right-wing populist claims for reasons of self-loathing
A bunch of billionaires just bought the American government and this is a takeaway, amazing

Next Democratic nominee must be a beastmode ultralib who understands that the Republican base mainly consists of hateful people who live in hellholes of their own making working rent-seeking jobs and spending their nights staring resentfully at the lights of the cities we have built.

These folks believe that people actually want to live in Asbestos County Ohio population 28 and so they need to invent reasons for why they aren't moving there in droves
Could it be that metropolitan areas produce jobs and opportunity through agglomeration and network effects? Impossible! Surely the same productivity is possible in exurbs and rural areas

people without papers mad because people who came later have papers is a death nail for any soliditistic politics
Undocumented Mexican immigrants angry at Nicaraguans asylum-seekers for having work permits and being proud of their US citizen children for voting for Trump because he will only deport criminals, not them. Whatever, man.

Tariffs poll well despite the fact that they would be disastrous for most people if implemented for the same reason mass deportations do. It's not economic, it's cultural. People like the idea of a virile strongman restoring American's wealth by brutalizing the dark-skinned people who took it.

we have one political party who’s entire agenda is quite literally torching the american economic engine purely out of resentment for the cosmopolitan professional class.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan's theory of the world, from 1976.

(Also in the same article, a comparison of his worldview. neoconservative in the original sense, to that in Saul Bellow's novel Mr. Sammler's Planet. Rick Perlstein draws the same comparison in The Invisible Bridge)

Hi, I really don't like doing stuff like this, but my family has been pushed into an impossible situation with my medical debt. I don't expect to raise all the money I need but even just a little bit would help a lot right now. gofund.me/e786a2d5

And writing software for GPS (say) is more beneficial to society and a better life.
So this is what we're doing now. Cool cool cool.
