The big balancing act for the Duffer Brothers IMO is that Stranger Things works because it is sort of cosy horror - heartbreaking deaths, jump scares, but ultimately it is a horror story set in a world of joy, not despair. Anyway, some thoughts on that, and on nostalgia here:
Pop culture has mastered nostalgia — by returning to a pre-smartphone era
‘Stranger Things’ is back for its final season, weaving fantasy set not in the future but in a past that its young fans never knew

Having finally seen the John Lewis ad, it is ofc v affecting (also comedy how the anti-wokes have tried to exploit it, given the music featured is Black music), but... I can't be the only one who thinks Charlotte Wells deserves a cut from any profits? It's clearly influenced by the end of Aftersun.

What's wild is, save for the lower order swinging away, the dismissals didn't feel that different from the ones I've seen in almost every other Ashes tour.

Yep. Her and her "the NWSL should have more than 30 teams" plan. Really shows what's being prioritised in that league.

On how Reform are making waves in towns like #Biddulph #NorthStaffordshire
While the British left is buried in factional debate, Reform is rapidly securing a foothold in former socialist heartlands across the country — paving the way for a nightmarish far-right takeover of the British state.

This weekend's match, in which I BURN Richard Osman, enjoy some good quality oxygen, almost barf at the sight of a flag, and sneer at people who like rugby.

It's off to Haywards Heath, to see an already impressive record get stretched a little more.

The Weekend Match: Haywards Heath Town 6-1 Lingfield - We're Trash, You & Me
They're the last team with a 100% league record in the top 35 divisions in England, but can they extend that run on international break weekend? (Yes. You can already see that from the title.)
