Hiker, book reader, baker, animal advocate, and all around okay person. 🌱 I loathe purposeful cruelty. Anti-Trump. Living life in SoCal. (No DMs or requests for money please; I will unfollow).
I don’t trust this. “Effectively” dead is not 100% dead - unlike the victims of ICE thugs. It’s a Saturday, so offices are closed but take 10 minutes to email your senators. Mine are Padilla and Schiff, and I just wrote them a letter each. I’ll follow up with a call on Monday.

The DHS funding bill is effectively dead in the Senate.

A friend of mine is in Las Vegas for a trade show and saw this poster on the wall. They should be everywhere.

For perspective on what’s possible for all U.S. cities and states listen to this Minnesota senator. Cruel times, indeed.
If you want to know what Stephen Miller’s policies will feel like in your town…

This poem by Laura Gilpin is one of my favorite things. It’s a reminder to me that every creature has its own umwelt, perceiving the world in its own unique and beautiful way.

I might have to give up reading the NYT and live in oblivion with my cats.

Has anyone been following the Buddhist monks who are walking for peace from Texas to DC? They’re in South Carolina today, & although I wish I could be there, I can only follow on Instagram right now. The dog Aloka, once a stray in India, walks with them. She has a heart between her eyes.

Love these ladies I met protesting in Torrance, CA, where about 500 people showed up to protest ICE. A big thank you to all the cars who honked.

ICE Out For Good - San Pedro/South Bay LA · Indivisible
Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity...

I love this response to the murder of Renee Nicole Good.
Sent this out via the newsletter earlier and no one really responded to it, so here it is. Someone said writing a poem wasn't an act of resistance, likening it to a fart in the wind; true, but I didn't write this as an act of resistance. I wrote it because I didn't know how else to process it all.

I can’t stop thinking about Renee Nicole Good. My heart physically hurts. How absolutely senseless. How tragic.

Here is an excerpt from a poem of hers, and the link to the full poem. 🤍

Happy #Caturday from Dante, who is the one who will decide if you are worthy. I see the scales of judgement in his mind.

My little house panther D’Arcy is flummoxed about the rain here in LA. He’s for sure thinking deep thoughts.

I took this photo the other day of a teenage Red-shouldered Hawk in camouflage. I don’t have a great camera, just my phone. I love seeing his foot.

Seeing a photo of this headstone (Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, Ohio) touched me. Gene Simmers was a combat medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action. I doubt we’ll ever know the story — but there’s no doubt about the guilt felt by Simmers.

This is 100% true. I’ve empirical evidence.
Wanna avoid responsibilities while appearing responsible?

Wanna escape your mess of a life while looking like you have it all together?

Wanna stave off people without coming across as rude?

Try reading a book in public! 📖

ok so i got some *more* constructive criticism from bird artists on my attempts at drawing birds. many said the legs weren’t realistic enough and i suspect they were right. i think i finally got it in this year’s calendar though, lemme know what you think

RFK Jr’s poem to Nuzzi is a crime against the humanities, and I highly recommend a wee dram of something strong to chase the poem down. I had a difficult time reading the line “Yr open mouth awaiting my harvest” without guffawing.

This is a Tom leading his flock in my mom’s neighborhood in southern Oregon. So majestic. So protective. Am I alone in thinking turkeys should be free and not factory farmed? Benjamin Franklin called them “birds of courage.”

Pigs are more intelligent than the current US president. Two other attributes they have are empathy and strong social bonds.
#LanguageMatters ⚖️
The uptick of people using pigs as an insult the last couple of days is disheartening. What may seem like a fair rebuttal to a vile man only serves to insidiously reinforce the idea that these intelligent, empathetic individuals are lesser than. A commodity, an ingredient, a slur.

Out of all the Epstein emails I’ve read thus far, this little one might be my fav. Epstein succinctly captures the Trumpian essence in a few keen observations.

I read this little piece on Reginald Betts today in “The Week” and I thought of Margaret Atwood’s famous quote: “A word after a word after a word is power.”
