I recommend following (and sharing) the starter packs from my friend @brenttoderian.bsky.social, an international expert in urban planning for life, people and wellbeing.
All of his posts and recommendations are also worth reading and sharing.
And don't hesitate to continue to follow him, too!!
I don’t know how many people join Bluesky each day, but my sense is that more & more people are discovering the outstanding community/conversation here (best on social media) about better cities. I still think STARTER PACKS are a superpower. I’ve made many, but here’s my first again. Please share.

This day was unreal - the energy downtown was the most jubilant and joyful I've ever seen Vancouver. And the winning game happened on my birthday, so it was easy to pretend the party was for me 😄

Wish we could do this in America.

If we also banned gas stations from posting prices on giant signs visible to speeding drivers on the street, then maybe our politics wouldn't revolve around lowering gas prices?
“Amsterdam is set to ban climate-damaging advertising [fossil fuel and meat adverts] in public spaces, following a trend spreading across Dutch cities.

France has also enacted legislation outlawing adverts from non-renewable energy companies, and one Italian city has plans to do the same.”

Yes! Being unbiased in your analysis is vital, but being neutral about your findings is inhuman, and a tradition born of political (even courtly) expedience!

"Just because this shouldn’t be a surprise to ANYONE, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be absolutely outraged about this" needs to go on a shirt.
Just because this shouldn’t be a surprise to ANYONE, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be absolutely outraged about this, & shouldn’t tolerate it for a second. We have to stop confusing the complete predictability of their evil and corruption as some weird form of futile acceptance. Too many are doing that.
Now we learn from Reps of both parties who saw the unredacted Epstein files today that Trump, Bondi, & Blanche are covering up the absolute worst things in the Epstein files to protect the wealthy, powerful and politically connected. DOJ is being run by criminal co-conspirators.

Really enjoyed this interview!

Brent's attitude is too rare. Made me think of Alexandria's Zoning for Housing plan, and how it felt like city staff proposed something that already compromised on every level with anticipated NIMBY pushback. And the city still got sued! Wish staff had been bolder.

If you widen that highway

you won’t reduce emissions

or congestion.

What you WILL do

is spend a lot of public money

to induce even more cars

emitting even more GHGs and pollution

in the same or worse congestion

with people still demanding that you widen the highway.

Period.

Very sad day in BC. The world doesn’t need more tragedy and more dead children.
Oh my God. 10 dead in a high school mass shooting (7 killed inside the school) in the small community of Tumbler Ridge in north-eastern British Columbia today. One of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history. This is an unthinkable nightmare that isn’t supposed to happen here. Or ANYWHERE.

Having spent most of my working life in transport policy, this is the essential truth that so many people - including politicians with responsibility for transport decisions - don’t or won’t get.

To reduce congestion, you reduce capacity and reduce speed. The empirical evidence is overwhelming.

Vancouver lags in building bike routes. This is the problem.

OMG, how I love Canada.
“The study, which mapped changes in both size & quality of bike infrastructure in Canadian cities, found Vancouver’s network grew by less than 1% between 2022-2024, the 2nd-lowest rate of any large Canadian city.”

Remember, cities with less can increase the % easier.

Still, poor leadership lately.

the thing about traffic congestion is that it doesn’t cost money to solve it, but rather the opposite: solving it with congestion pricing *raises* money

that’s because a critical mass of car trips are very low value and it’s essentially a coordination problem to get them off the road at scale
This is still one of my favourite videos ever, perfectly explaining the staggering amount of public money that’s going into NOT solving traffic congestion.

Good thread! It’s sad that it can be both true that you can make people’s lives significantly better and save taxpayer dollars and that this program can be canceled because of, well, ideology.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

Whether that’s handled well or badly though, especially in a city like Vancouver where public realm design is a big deal, involves a dance between the host city & the organizing committee, who have VERY different priorities. 3/
