“I think Paris is uniquely positioned to celebrate bold action from cities all over the world. Because in my observation Paris, and Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social, have been the most inspiring in the world over the last 10 years, really exemplifying those key words ‘further and faster.’” — BT
NEW: “Canadian urbanist @brenttoderian.bsky.social teamed up with the city of Paris and, in particular, its mayor, @annehidalgo.bsky.social on a new exhibition that shines a light on cities and global climate action.”

Thanks very much @momentummag.bsky.social for the great questions! #Paris
“2. Speak at City Hall in SUPPORT of something good for your city, rather than just going to oppose things. And before you oppose something (such as well-designed density, new housing choices, or affordable housing), think carefully about who it’s meant to help, and put yourself in their place.”

We're spending a couple of weeks in #Lisbon, and if there is a city that needs @brenttoderian.bsky.social to come save it from itself and its car obsessions, it's this one. From the extremely complicated public transport to the car-first-everywhere mindset, a beautiful city disappears.

It is a far superior way to get to work! It reduces stress before you arrive and after you leave! You have time to say hello to people you see on the street, so it increases community. And then there are these fiscal benefits as well. Ask your mayor to make YOUR city bike-commuter friendly!

We lack coherent policy guidance and shoot on our own goal repeatedly. It’s all connected: planning, architecture, budget, transit, housing/land use policy; we’re facing challenges and the same old same old isn’t good enough; @brenttoderian.bsky.social @toderianuw.bsky.social

"“The kinds of figures we’re talking about—that would actually save public money, remember—are rounding errors in most transportation budgets,” @brenttoderian.bsky.social says. “So cities are literally wasting public money by not investing in smart bike infrastructure.””
“If you care about the bottom line, budgets & taxes, then you should care about urban biking, because it’s a money saver. It’s ironic when so-called fiscal conservatives attack biking, when their efforts just show a lack of understanding of math.” My interview with @modacitylife.com #CityMakingMath
Opinion: Why more urban cycling saves everyone money | Urbanized
The resulting benefits of a ‘car-less’ household are myriad, but few are as quantifiable as the money most people sink into a depreciating asset that sits unused for 95% of the time.

“But the world is full of growing cities with heavy traffic, difficult parking and no bike lanes at all. The region is growing, and, as the planner @brenttoderian.bsky.social likes to say: “If everyone tries to move by car, nobody moves.”

At this rate, I would earn 1900-2000 EUR/year for biking to work.

(Note: I live in the united states, and it is sprawly over here)
Commuting by bicycle in Belgium pays off as employees earn compensation for every km they ride. 1 in 6 employees commute by bike and get a bicycle allowance of €0.28/km. People cycling to work in 2024 earned an average of around €460 net per year (some as high as €810), up 20% over the past year.
Belgian commutes pay off: Employees earn up to €810 for cycling to work
One in five people in Flanders commuted by bike and received compensation last year, but this figure is significantly lower in Brussels and Wallonia.

These are so dumb. Especially in a city with good mass transit.
“Traffic lights across the city were down, seemingly confusing the driverless cars —& halting them in their tracks. Riders and pedestrians posted videos of Waymos stuck at intersections, long lines of drivers behind them.”

Less well known— driverless cars contribute to traffic congestion EVERY day.
