I finished reading House of Leaves last month and find myself still thinking about it daily. Difficult to put my finger on exactly what caused it to make such an impression. But I’ve never read another book like it before and doubt I will again.

a society where "bad immigrants" are demonised is a society where no immigrant can truly feel welcome, because aren't we all just one wrong turn or accident away from being unemployed? on disability benefits? unable to care for our children without state help? just no such thing as a safe immigrant

Incredibly depressing day. I've spent my entire life being told by British governments how dreadful immigration is. New Labour did it. The Coalition. The Brexiters. Now Starmer. All of them accusing the ones who came before them of failing to clamp down. The same old vacant mean-spirited bollocks.

AI (like crypto) needs to be properly taxed to reflect the environmental and technological costs.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

I wonder if FIFA told the US it had to be a dictatorship with a poor human rights record before it was allowed to host the World Cup.

Modern Europe is shaped by two things: two world wars and (for nearly half of EU member states) Soviet occupation. That inheritance translates into more than merely wanting a peaceful life.

What’s the point in refusing citizenship to refugees who have ‘made a dangerous journey’?

What’s the point in publishing footage of people being deported?

I’m sorry to say that this is simply a continuation of the performative cruelty we saw from the Conservatives.

1001 days.
I remember waking up to the horrible news that Russia had invaded Ukraine.
And I remember feeling very strongly, what I remain convinced of now. There is no point pretending that this is some distant thing that only happens to other people, far away.

This is about our future, too.
