This week I discovered an artist called Freshman Biology who uses busted up folk instruments to make music that specifically sounds like it was made by a band of small, boisterous goblins and other creatures freshmanbiology.bandcamp.com/track/the-je...

The tech industry's smol bean act is so maddening. Gee, all we did is put out products that make frequent errors while telling everyone they're going to lose their jobs to them. How come they don't like that?
Microsoft's head of AI doesn't understand why people don't like AI, and I don't understand why he doesn't understand because it's pretty obvious
Is it really "mindblowing" that people are skeptical of software that consistently doesn't do the things we're told it can do?

Rebecca was one of the founders of Interplay and programmed & designed for some of the most influential games of my youth, notably Bard's Tale I & III and Wasteland. She will be missed.
My trailblazing game industry bad-ass friend Rebecca Heineman has passed away.

Fuck cancer.

"I'm always trying to push it, always trying to push it more. Like, how heavy can we get it? I'm really exploring the extremes of distortion with this project. How distorted can you get it, where you lose the musicality, and then bring it back."
Mick Gordon is asking 'how heavy can we get it?' in his first full game soundtrack since Doom Eternal: 'The actual feeling I'm trying to capture is from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie'
"It's celebrating that deformity, almost like some form of rebellion."

Very spirited @pcgamer.com GOTY meeting this year. Such a variety of games to debate the merits of, not a year where there's a perfect consensus on anything.

Here it is. The absolute strategy beast that is Europa Universalis 5. My review:

Europa Universalis 5 sets a new bar for historical simulation complexity
Even hardened grand strategy veterans may be startled by the complexity of this historical simulation.

I really enjoy our tradition of publishing a new Top 100 list every year. Each year it makes people mad or happy in new ways and reflects something of the state of PC gaming—it's cool that Dwarf Fortress and Caves of Qud are both in the top 10 this year.

Double Fine and Obsidian appear to be doing well under Microsoft, but it is hard to square talk about nurturing creativity with everything else that has happened in the past five years. www.pcgamer.com/gaming-indus...
Xbox boss Phil Spencer says 'nurturing and protecting creative teams that want to go take risks' is the priority, admits 'we don't always succeed at that'
The Microsoft Gaming CEO spoke about his priorities at an industry event, but contradictions haunt the company's grand strategy.

Strange perspective. The audience doesn't define itself, it's defined as whoever consumes the things. If whiners were the problem, publishers could price them out by charging $1,000, and then they would no longer be the audience.
AAA video games should cost $100 on launch. this would still be extremely cheap for the amount of time and enjoyment you get out of them! But an audience of whiny babies has kept them literally at the same price for *two decades* despite both general inflation *and* sector-specific costs rising

I've become mesmerized by Erik Satie's Gnossienne No. 1, whose sheet music includes instructions like "wonder about yourself," and spent the week practicing it obsessively. My piano skills are not quite worth sharing yet but here is someone whose performance I like. youtu.be/oOTpQpoHHaw?...

The @pcgamer.com team is constantly introducing me to cool games I hadn't heard of. @dilfpatrol.bsky.social turned me on to Sword Hero recently and it looks sick.
The solo dev behind RPG Sword Hero is promising a 'seamless open world' with amazing combat, intricate simulation, and systemic dismemberment—the demo on Steam makes me think they can pull it off
