Welcome, new followers! I write SFF about conflict, memory, death, and what comes after. Some of my recent work is linked below. I also post enthusiastically about what I'm reading and (less enthusiastically) about how world leaders are failing to learn the lessons SFF has been teaching for decades.

That's some good news to wrap up the year!
From the Editorial Board: The American Booksellers Association reported that more than 420 new bookstores opened this year, part of a rebirth of bookshops after the initial Amazon/big-box shock that caused so many to go under.
Editorial: The bookstore comeback is good news for readers
Bookstore declines appear to be reversing. Barnes and Noble opened nearly 70 new stores this year.

It's been a strange and in many ways terrible year, but good books persist in spite of everything. Here are a few that spoke to me this most this year (as always, not necessarily published in 2025, this is just the year I read them).

Spoiler-free thread of recommendations.

I'm looking for a very specific reading recommendation: stories featuring empires where the position of Emperor is a passive one or where the Emperor is deliberately incapacitated as a condition of the role. Not "secret plot with a secret dead Emperor," but it's a feature of how the empire works.

We're a little behind the times, but my Hugo book club just wrapped up our annual read of all the novel nominees, and it reminded me once again how great it is to read books in community - even books you don't particularly enjoy. Reading together = awesome.

I'm really excited to see @premeemohamed.com's The Butcher of the Forest and Sofia Samatar's The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain as Nebula finalists. These were two of my favorite books from last year and they absolutely deserve this recognition.

This is good advice - and if I may add one more observation, consider the purpose of religion in your story. Religious principles shape law, acceptable social action, ideas about who is a legitimate leader, and more. Even if your MC isn't devout, religion can influence how they perceive the world.
The closer you look, and the more you think about actual, individual people interacting with their world, the more likely your invented religion will seem realistic to readers.

Any general framework you come up with to describe "Religion" let alone "rules" for building one, will fail.

Sure feels like a lot of the US government is run by Echthroi at the moment, and also like a lot of Americans would rather live in Camazotz.

Me? I'm reciting poetry and doing my times tables nonstop these days.
