2025-11-29 Sat: Read Krister Wahlbäck's magnificent overview of the "Finnish Question" in Swedish politics since 1809, "Jättens andedräkt: Finlandsfrågan i Svensk politik 1809-2009" (2011; translated into Finnish as "Jättiläisen henkäys", 2020).

Necessary reading for Finns... and Swedes.

The Swedish Total defence duty is also highlighted early on in the 2024 booklet, but much later in the 1989 edition.
Outtake from the 2024 booklet: "Total defence duty From the year you turn 16 until the end of the year you turn 70, you are part of Sweden’s total defence and required to serve in the event of war or the threat of war. Total defence duty applies to all Swedish citizens living in Sweden or abroad. Total defence duty also applies to foreign nationals residing in Sweden. Total defence duty consists of: •Military or civil defence service. During a heightened state of alert, you are to proceed immediately to the place you have been designated in your wartime posting. •General national service. If the Swedish government activates general national service, you are to remain at work or carry out other tasks in support of Sweden’s total defence system." And highlighted on a yellow background: "During a heightened state of alert, go to work as usual unless you are assigned a specific wartime posting." Som 80-talist är det svårt att förstå protesterna mot Öresundsbron. Eller, jag förstår såklart argumenten som var, men med tanke på hur naturlig bron är idag för oss skåningar är det ändå lite svårt att greppa. Men så är det ju, saker och tider förändras.

The other day I noticed that 7th South Scanian Armoured Regiment in the very south of Sweden have virtually the same coat-of-arms as the 12th Bolesław Krzywousty Szczecin Mechanised Division in the northwesternmost corner of Poland, all be it with different colours. A coincidence? 🧵
