CVI works. Richmond went from 47 homicides to 2 by centering those most affected in violence prevention. Healing, mentorship, and accountability reduce shootings and heal communities. Medical providers should support CVI—it’s public health in action.

States can use Medicaid to sustain community violence intervention programs—but only with careful planning, strong leadership, data, and cross-sector partnerships. This is critical as both CVI and Medicaid funding face growing threats.

Grateful to the Tennessee 11 and colleagues at Yale and UConn (including Advisory Council member @meganranney.bsky.social) for showing what’s possible when people with different views come together. Dialogue, science, and shared humanity are how we prevent firearm injury—and how we heal.

Firearm-related deaths are up dramatically among middle- and high school-aged youth. Urban high schoolers face rising homicide risk; rural youth face higher suicide risk and increasing homicides. Providers must recognize this as a public health crisis.

Thank you to child psychologist Ellen Braaten for naming what so many of us feel: the old reassurances no longer work. As clinicians, we can’t call this “rare” anymore. Gun violence is a public health crisis—and protecting children means taking action.

Thank you to the @amjpublichealth.bsky.social for underscoring why research and infrastructure matter. The recent drop in firearm deaths shows what evidence-based prevention can achieve—but progress depends on sustained investment, not disinvestment.
