States can use Medicaid to sustain community violence intervention programs—but only with careful planning, strong leadership, data, and cross-sector partnerships. This is critical as both CVI and Medicaid funding face growing threats.

We salute @amsanational.bsky.social for their stance on gun violence. We’re excited that future physicians are refusing to accept the status quo, calling for evidence-based solutions to firearm violence. Established providers: follow their lead and equip trainees to act as public health advocates.

Over 584k violence-related injuries were treated from 2017–2021 in the U.S., mostly firearm-related.

Healthcare providers see these patients daily—our role in prevention, safety counseling, and advocacy is essential to reduce deaths.

“I am not a gun expert, but I am an expert in the aftermath."

We salute Dr. Tim Kummer, the first physician on scene at the Annunciation school shooting, for his service and his impactful testimony. #ThisIsOurLane

While we focus a lot on how to help patients, we need to also talk about how we can protect ourselves and our fellow clinicians.

Yesterday was Physician Suicide Prevention day — Checking in on colleagues, discussing mental health resources, and talking about firearm access help prevent crises.

Today is #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay. Providers save lives by asking about guns in the home, listening to the experiences of our patients, and offering solutions. Every conversation matters. What’s one step you’ll take today to help prevent firearm suicide?

Providers can suggest options that reduce immediate risk: secure storage at home, temporary off-site storage, or even an extreme risk protection order are all options to help prevent firearm suicide. #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay

We already ask about seatbelts, smoke detectors, and opioids. Firearm access is another routine part of preventive care. When providers normalize these questions, patients feel supported—not judged. #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay

Suicide attempts with firearms are almost always fatal. That’s why public health providers must talk with patients about secure storage and firearm access. These conversations are prevention, not politics. #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay

More than half of gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides. Unlike many causes of death, this one is preventable. Public health providers have a unique role to play—our engagement and having conversations about secure firearm storage can change outcomes. #FirearmSuicidePreventionDay

As doctors, we see how moments of crisis can turn deadly when a gun is within reach. Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) — known as Firearm Restraining Orders in Illinois — give families time to heal. Talking to patients about options like this one can save lives. Awareness saves lives.

Among dementia caregivers, 29% said the person they care for owned a gun, but only 5% of caregivers had ever been counseled on gun access and safety.. Treating dementia + firearm access as a public health issue can save lives.

In rural America, gun access is high and so are suicide rates & barriers to care. We need more rural health care, and open conversations about firearm access and safety from trusted messengers.

Gun-related suicides hit a new high in the U.S. for the 3rd year in a row. In 2023, guns caused nearly 47,000 deaths—one every 11 minutes—and were the leading cause of death for kids aged 1–17 for the 4th straight year. Healthcare professionals asking patients about firearm access CAN save lives.
