There was and may still be a thriving cottage industry getting around this for agricultural hardware
this is also the working business model for everything including software you need to make things and also industrial hardware
can't imagine why video games are struggling when the prevailing business model is "we didn't pay any people to make this, but you can pay us (monthly) to play it, and pay even more to play the whole thing, but also you don't own it"
