Very good thread.
This quote is actually saying the quiet part out loud: "You cannot make a return on investment if you don't have access to the U.S. market" is an admission of how people in the US have been implicitly subsidizing the global healthcare system, to the benefit of the other OECD countries specifically.
In terms of what cures are being lost:

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

a bunch of people who work for AI companies and largely paid in vesting stock options are overwhelmed by the magnitude and depth of what they've created. everyone else is a curmudgeon or otherwise a confused hater. truly this is an irreconcilable intellectual dilemma.

Glad to finally see a commercial recording of Luca Francesconi's "Duende", and to remind myself that it really is as good as I remembered.

So Trivers is a chaser as well as being Epstein-funded? That tracks.
i was able to put together the timeline of the epstein/trivers relationship and wrote it up. in 2015, epstein bragged to chomsky that he was trivers' main funder. the next year he explicitly funds trivers so that he can pursue "transgender biology." trivers publishes the digit ratio work in 2020

(Would love a new recording of this work, actually.)

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

Things you could do instead of arguing with that guy on the Internet:

- paint your toenails
- take a bath
- have sex
- make some art
- listen to a song you like
- take a walk
- learn something new

I feel like if you're a marginalized person asked to be a spokesperson for anything that's a service dealing with money, health, housing, or education, you should just assume you're being asked to fuck over your people, guaranteed.

Tired
By Langston Hughes

I am so tired of waiting.
Aren’t you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two—
And see what worms are eating
At the rind.

The BIS Ustvolskaya symphonies recording that just came out is *very* good, though...

This reminds me of my mother's rants about how Tony Benn was a hypocrite because he didn't want rich people to have the same advantages he'd had as a result of growing up rich. I guess the argument is that it's hypocritical to fight any kind of injustice that you personally benefitted from?

The faculty who say we should use AI to grade/give feedback because it's a way for us to "reclaim our time."

Line in the sand.

It isn't our time. It's theirs. If you have such little respect for your students and their time, quit.

Disrespectfully, the rest of us.
