Back in the 90s, me and my pals played Pokémon before school.
They banned Pokémon because it encouraged gambling(?)
My buddy (Melchiore, heck of a name) had a sibling that had Magic cards.
We used their bulk commons and made up our own rules until 7th edition released that starter pack years later.

Got to play some IRL Commander last night with friends and every single one of my decks just seemed to "pop off" at some point. Had a ton of fun! Trying to get better at not apologizing for my decks doing extremely well, instead thanking my opponents for putting up with my plays.
