Not a bad list, but it's a huge bummer to exclude Bryce Dessner's TRAIN DREAMS and Daniel Lopatin's MARTY SUPREME. (Daniel Blumberg's TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE didn't even make the shortlist, for shame.) And I would personally disqualify HAMNET for its egregious climactic needledrop.

I just added a few dozen blind spot movies to my watchlist from this instructive and extremely readable list. (I *knew* Grand Canyon wouldn't be on here, but doggone it, it's still a travesty!)

I was hypnotized by THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE, which features Amanda Seyfried's career best performance, and particularly by its meditative Shaker song-score by Daniel Blumberg. I spoke with him, Seyfried, and director Mona Fastvold about their feat of creating the experience of religious fervor.
Making a bold musical about the Shakers? Daniel Blumberg's songs brought the world in tune
After winning an Oscar for "The Brutalist," the English composer takes on a musical about the founder of the Shakers — a close collaboration with Amanda Seyfried.

After this year it’s very refreshing to read a biography of a truly beautiful soul.

Oliver Stone's NIXON, now more than ever.

A guest column by moi, in advance of tomorrow's dream-come-true 30th anniversary screening with me and Mr. Stone.
Oliver Stone’s ‘Nixon’ at 30: A Portrait of a President Quite Unlike Trump
Though the two are often compared due to their hostility toward the press and their vengeful spirits, Stone's movie shows a POTUS who also has emotional depth and a deeply sympathetic side.

Tim Greiving, author of the recent John Williams biography, has a fantastic SubStack where he shares articles/posts like this one below. This one in particular touches on John's use of synths and sampling. A great read!

Great profile of a GREAT score
So many of my favorite Safdie moments are shaped and italicized by Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), a musician who's singlehandedly bringing back the era of synth wizards. His work for MARTY SUPREME is the main character. It was a pleasure discussing his art. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...
His electronica, a blend of past and future, gives 'Marty Supreme' its swagger
Daniel Lopatin discusses the process of composing his synthesized score for Josh Safdies's 'Marty Supreme,' both evocative of ’80s nostalgia and something new.

A shoutout to Tim Greiving (@tgreiving.bsky.social) for his wonderful biography about the maestro #JohnWilliams. I have been listening to the audio book narrated by Jonathan Todd Ross. It opened up a whole new world about the composer who I admire full-heartedly since the 1980s. Thank you.

Tim Greiving has written the definitive biography of John Williams, and I think you'll have fun listening to us talk about the art of writing about creatives, which of Williams' scores is the best, and why the cautionary advice "never meet your heroes" didn't hold up in this case.
It was such an honor—and such FUN—to be interviewed by @brianjayjones.com for the @biographersintl.bsky.social podcast. Brian was a hugely helpful, path-forging adviser to me when I first started working on my John Williams book... and he was the one who encouraged me to join BIO!
