As an editor I often see authors fall into a trap of stressing some fancy statistical technique for estimating causal effects. Often neglected are the necessary assumptions to map the data to the estimand. @pausalz.bsky.social and I wrote about it here www.bmj.com/content/391/...

Causal inference is hard, and advanced statistical analysis is not enough
Health researchers need to fully understand the underlying assumptions to uncover cause and effect. Timothy Feeney and Paul Zivich explain Physicians ask, answer, and interpret myriad causal question...

This whole NYT account about the weaponization of DOJ is beyond disturbing. Kinda feels like the US government fell in January.

Perhaps we are at the point where universities should be making themselves much less dependent on microsoft.

i would not want to be a member of a party that had any room for nazi/hitler sympathy.
This seems like a bad thing to have. I feel like the entirety of both parties should be anti-Hitler.

But a senior Republican just publicly admitted that’s not true.

That’s … really really bad.
Cool. What would you call the other wing then? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/03/u...

IMO democracy becomes impossible in the absence of any social or political norms against lying.
Kristi Noem: "No American citizens have been arrested or detained. We focus on those who are here illegally. And anything you would hear or report that would be different than that is simply not true and false reporting."

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

I’m good with my taxes subsidizing social welfare for people who can’t afford food.

I’m enraged with my taxes subsidizing corporate welfare to businesses that won’t pay a living wage.

same method also works for mike johnson apparently.
TIL the technique for placating fish is the same as for placating pigeons / doves / many other birds
They can sometimes be calmed down a bit by inversion, but we find a towel over the eyes works best (technique works on many smaller fishes too!)
