Billy Nicholls’ Would You Believe is a psych-pop classic. To some, it’s often dubbed Swinging London’s Pet Sounds, having been conceived by a 16-year-old and featuring lavish arrangements by John Paul Jones. (2025 reissue)

A curious Christgau, a futile cassette dig, live versus recorded, tuneful versus melodic, remembering Pulnoc, and the lineaments of delight are all addressed in the Thanksgiving edition of Xgau Sez at my irrepressible Substack And It Don't Stop. robertchristgau.substack.com/p/xgau-sez-n...
Xgau Sez: November, 2025
What's in a name, live vs. recorded, tuneful vs. melodic, Pulnoc at P.S. 122, a lost Clash cassette, and a half-century-plus of delightful rhetoric.

Thanks so much to GQ for publishing my liner notes for the new Replacements 'Let It Be' boxset, out on Friday. Extra special thanks to Jessica Hopper, Patterson Hood and Brian Paulson for their extraordinary insights. What an absolute joy this project has been to work on. www.gq.com/story/when-t...
When The Replacements' Courage Was at its Peak
On their 1984 album ‘Let It Be,’ the Minneapolis indie-rock wastrels spewed a message of working-class passion and outsider solidarity into the world's answering machine.

I don't know if this is my favorite Todd Snider song, or the best Todd Snider song but it is undisputably the most Todd Snider song.

I'm very sorry to report that the great alt-country singer-songwriter Todd Snider has died at 59 of undiagnosed walking pneumonia. I stick by what I wrote about him in 2012. www.robertchristgau.com/xg/bn/2012-0... Here's Rolling Stone's coverage. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...

Todd Snider was sneaky good, among the best songwriters of my lifetime minus the self-seriousness. He abided, like the Dude + laughs + another round. A humanist artist unafraid to mock himself. Also: His "regional leaders of sales" might be the smartest/funniest lyrical punchline I've ever heard.

Post West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, the eponymous 1973 folk rock offering from Shaun Harris is a gem best reserved for those with a penchant for sadness presented through a jagged, downright sunny orchestral filter.
