Also, as I note in the piece, we may be seeing a cost of Democratic apathy towards crim legal reform, and the broader centrist backlash against reformers.

Chicago and LA both ended up ousting* reformers for tougher-on-crime Dems who don't like going after police. And thus aren't standing up to ICE.

Trump's idea to seize Venezuela's oil industry faces major hurdles
Venezuela's oil industry is in disrepair after years of neglect and international sanctions, so it will likely take years and major investments before production can increase dramatically.

Venezuela live updates: Uncertainty and legal questions remain after US captures Maduro
The Trump administration’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and claims that it will “run” the country are raising stark new questions about the legality of the U.S. actions and its future operations in the South American nation.

It was clear from very early that we had cooperation from inside. This makes it seems like we were just brought in to facilitate a palace coup.

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

People (e.g. Schumer) seem to think that we are occupying or doing regime change in Venezuela, probably because that's what we'd have to do if we wanted to effect real change there. We're not doing that because Trump only cares about the headlines and posts.
we have gone through to a mirror universe where instead of the government not caring about twitter because it isn’t real life, it doesn’t care about real life because it isn’t twitter

23 days ago Seth Moulton voted to supply $900 billion to the Trump regime's war machine in exchange for segregation laws for trans people.
Moulton: "When we had briefings on Venezuela, we asked, 'Are you going to invade the country?' We were told no. 'Do you plan to put troops on the ground?' We were told no. 'Do you intend regime change in VZ?' We were told no. So in a sense, we have been briefed, we've just been completely lied to"

A lot of people are asking why we would attack Venezuela. I think this is mostly a result of the Trump administration's incompetence at propaganda, as any Republican administration since Eisenhower would have signed off on this raid, and probably some Democratic ones too.

I feel like the history of western imperialism is often like this, where there's an almost-plausible case for resource-grabbing, an almost plausible geopolitical explanation (first Caracas, then Havana), and a sort of liberal imperialist fig leaf to keep democrats from being too mad (the Nobel shit)

1) There is an OLC opinion that authorizes this, which future AG then OLC head Bill Barr signed in 1989 to authorize the very similar Panama invasion.
2) There is an indictment. It was unsealed under Barr in 2020.
