Since taking over DOGE, Elon Musk has lost more of his own wealth than DOGE has managed to save from the budget.

I’m not sure you can spend the last decade painting anyone who still supports membership of a trading partnership as a traitor then pivot to “we must give the authoritarian invader of Europe everything he wants” and not expect a teensy bit of Quisling chat back, if I’m honest.

This is a superb piece of writing and analysis by @stephenkb.bsky.social in which he takes apart Tory opportunism and pandering to Elon Musk over the grooming gangs and compares it to Farage’s consistent red line on Tommy Robinson. Compulsory reading.
Good morning. I hope you were able to have a good restorative break. My thanks to Jim, Robert, Miranda, Lucy, Jen, Jude, Chris and Georgina for minding the fort while I was on holiday.

A core theme of Tory government over the last decade and a half was of increasingly complex strategies to convince the public something had been done. Doing it would have often been easier
True of Johnson, but also true of Sunak, who throughout the book seems to cycle through different political strategists and positions, but at no point seems to go “okay, are we actually making any *progress* on those pledges I made?”

NEW: Why do we always think crime is rising, even when it isn’t?

This week I looked at one of the big data mysteries. Britain is 2/3 less violent than the 1990s; thefts were higher pre-lockdown

Why, then, doesn’t it feel like it?

My latest Guardian piece.

Until I moved to Wales, I never knew how badly it was treated.

Working at a journo it became clear that not only is Wales treated like less of a country than Scotland, but that it has come to just accept this poor treatment.

The most infuriating thing isn’t that Wales is treated as a non-country – it’s that we accept it | Will Hayward
From the the Barnett formula to the humiliation of having an English ‘Prince of Wales’, you’d never catch Scotland allowing this treatment, says Guardian columnist Will Hayward

This is what the increase in decisions and interviews following the election looks like. The drop off in May, June and July was because the Illegal Migration Act had prevented officials from processing any claims. The new government undid that, getting the system going again.

Deeply unserious. Embarrassingly so
Kemi Badenoch's spokesman tells me that she is calling for Keir Starmer to hold another general election now because the Conservative party wants to "have another go" at winning.

I find it naive to think that, under Trump, the UK could somehow forge a third way between the US and the EU––especially on trade. In reality, it might leave the UK in the worst position of all: not being a credible and trustworthy partner to either the Trump administration or European capitals.

Whether or not you believe Russia will start a "nuclear war" over a few Western supplied Ukrainian missiles hitting targets in Russia (as Western missiles repeatedly struck targets inside Crimea, which Russia believes is Russian territory, and Russia did nothing) is tantamount to an IQ test.

In all the excitement of will Sunak get it through or not, we do forget he sits on a large theoretic majority. The number of times this has happened since 2019 should be raised by the commentariate much more than it is.
