The customized model that we are using works a lot better than a generic LLM like ChatGPT, which often makes the text more complex than necessary or applies "academic style" (which can seriously harm the clarity of your writing).

We have more practice recognizing what is illogical in meaning than what is illogical in structure.

An illogical structure makes it harder for people to understand us. But it can be hard to notice in our own writing. And it slips past the best of us.

I help researchers (and others) explicitly learn to write clearly. AI can't write (=think) for us. We need to think for ourselves and teach others how to as well.

Clear writing helps researchers in all fields.

Are there any template letters available/scripts for calling elected officials? Or priority list of who to call? #Science &#Research needs us! #Grant review/funding cannot stop--the ramifications are HUGE & Or BIGLY bad (words Trump understands)! We'll need to #PlainLanguage what we say (6th grade)?
Sure would be a shame if a bunch of PhDs who suddenly have a lot of time on their hands due to no grant writing or reviewing spent all that energy calling and writing their elected officials every single fucking day

Clear, concise language benefits people who:
1. Are working in a non-native language
2. Are reading while distracted, hurried, tired, or stressed
3. Don't already know about the topic
4. Are neurodivergent

How many of us recognize ourselves in this list?

"The common narrative is that kids learn faster than adults, but if you watch any toddler they spend a large portion of the day attempting things that are on the edge of their ability.

How much time have you spent on the edge of your ability today?"

I start sentences with AND + BUT whenever I want.

When writing to share information, what writing "rules" did you learn when you were younger that you now have the confidence to ignore?

I work under the assumption that academic writing can and should be clear and easy to read.

In my experience, writers only need a few strategies to drastically improve the quality of their text.

Will you start using these strategies?

Do you write to be understood? Or to make yourself look smart?

I am curious how many native English researchers think about their audience being non-English? How would researchers around the world (who are reading your work in a foreign language) rate your clarity?

Hands down the hardest part about developmental editing for academics is how much thinking it takes to really understand someone's ideas, evaluate their merit, strengths and weaknesses, and then writing truly constructive feedback to help the author grow as a scholar.

Don't you hate it when a writer sets you up to expect something and then—BAM!—gives you the opposite of what you expected?

The only bad sentence is an illogical one.

People can be so creative in holding on to wordiness. 🤔

Reallywrite prompts us to remove phrases like "research shows that..."

But some students dive down a thesaurus rabbit hole and end up with a fancified but equally wordy:

Evidence has revealed that...🤯

"A word doesn’t mean what a writer thinks it means; it means what readers think it means. And readers don’t, it seems, agree on what distinction there is between use and utilize, or whether there’s any distinction at all."

How many cups of coffee should it take to get through an academic article?

How about none?

If you lighten the burden on the reader, they won't be falling asleep.

One easy way to lighten the burden is to reduce the number of zombie nouns in your writing.

Zombie Nouns | ReallyWrite
Zombie nouns (or nominalisations) are unnecessarily long, heavy nouns that would work better as verbs or adjectives.
