A week ago I got to celebrate being the first person in my family (including my husband’s side) to get a graduate degree!! I’m incredibly thankful for my family that flew out to celebrate & the family and friends who joined the ceremony via zoom. Here’s to 3 (or 4) more years until the last one!
My department clinic is accepting applications our 2026-2027 Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship! This is a collaborative training experience based at UM's Clinical Psychology Center (CPC) and Garden City Professionals (GPC). Check it out here:

Trump’s USDA has emailed grocery retailers warning them not to give discounts to SNAP recipients who will not be receiving assistance this month.

While we’re on this topic, it’s a great time to donate to a local food bank if you can.

Diaper banks also need help if you have one nearby.

This is extremely troubling news for those of us who conduct human subjects research.
RFK is undoing human subjects protections so he can conduct placebo trials of vaccines. That means infecting people knowingly. I wonder who will “volunteer” for these trials? If history is any guide, a lot of incarcerated and other powerless people.
Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.

Today I started my grad cognition class for our masters program (we’re on a quarter system).

After introductions, I start with a brief historical consideration of cognitive psychology. I note that the Gestalt school was a cognitive approach based in Germany.

We then talked about what happened. 1/

The GRFP announcement from NSF cuts out an entire cohort of 2nd year students from consideration, without warning. This is so deeply unfair that it warrants a formal protest from the scientific community. If someone wants to work with me to craft an open letter and solicit signatures, LMK.
New: After a long wait, the GRFP solicitation is live! Deadlines have been extended to early November, so applicants have a bit over a month to submit. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Unfortunately, ASFP will not be operating this fall, as our volunteers are facing challenges to the complex technical systems underlying our program. We are deeply frustrated we cannot support every applicant this fall, and hope to be back in fall 2026.
