Slightly grumpy older dame living in southern Tasmania. Voracious reader of crime novels and occasional knitter. Politically left leaning. #auspol #politas
I was 14 when the Whitlam government was dismissed from office. I remember how it outraged my father. He was a true believer, a Labor man through and through. It certainly started my interest in politics and led to my march down the left wing path. Sadly, Labor now is a shadow of its former self.

The government's "review" into management and usage of Mt. Wellington/kunanyi was a complete stitch-up. I completed the review and could tell by how the questions were framed that the government was angling for the responses it wanted. #politas
Kunanyi/Mount Wellington cable car included in draft recommendations
The Tasmanian government has made a draft recommendation for a cable car on Hobart's Kunanyi/Mount Wellington, documents released under Right to Information laws show.

Like it or not, a cashless society is coming. With so few people using cash these days the costs associated with managing cash will be prohibitive.
Tapped out: Cash advocates suss on mandate plan
When a power outage struck on one of Mitta Mitta Brewing Company's busiest days of the year, three things kept the business ticking over.

The "growth mentality" will be humanity's downfall. Of that there is no doubt. One way or another we will ultimately destroy ourselves. I still have hope but sadly it's ever diminishing. We need more Bob Browns and fewer Elon Musks. #climatechange #environment

Very much enjoyed the book which I read recently. Didn't know there was a TV series in development. The book is set in Ireland though. An Irish adaptation of the book would have been ideal but this American version sounds good. #allherfault

Private health cover is usually pretty good when it comes to hospital stays, but the extras cover is woeful. Last time I went to the dentist, a check-up and clean was fully covered because I used a "preferred provider" but outside of basic care, out-of-pocket costs are high.
A trip to the dentist made me question my private health insurance
Do I walk away from private insurance and trust that health challenges will have me seen promptly enough in the public system?

I recently read Andrea Mara's novel All Her Fault and thought it would be a good miniseries. Just found out it has been made into a series starring Sarah Snook. Shame the original Irish setting has been swapped for an American one, but based on the book and with Snook leading, it should be good.

DO NOT (& I cannot emphasise this enough) BUY TASMANIAN SALMON.
You are not supporting Tasmania by purchasing it. You are supporting the rape of our environment, the profits of a foreign company and outrageous animal cruelty.

Why anybody eats Tasmanian farmed salmon is a mystery to me. It's not healthy eating. We're being told this antibiotic use is fine. Don't eat wild fish caught within 3km of salmon pens though. So people who want to catch their own fish can't even do that. #politas
Antibiotic approved for Tasmania's farmed salmon — but maybe don't eat fish caught nearby
The industry's use of the drug is in response to an "endemic" bacterial disease that caused the deaths of up to 15,000 tonnes of salmon from January to April, resulting in dead fish material washing u...

My older brother, now 75, is a lifelong renter. He lives in Sydney and has somehow managed to stay in the same apartment for over 30 years. He relies on the aged pension and his rent takes two-thirds of it. He does have some superannuation but it's a precarious situation.
Forever renters want solutions. Experts say look at Vienna
Australia has a growing cohort of forever renters and experts say the government should be looking to examples in other countries where more social and affordable housing options are being developed.
