Help with ideas: I teach an undergraduate course called Biodiversity & the Anthropocene. Any ideas about a classroom assignment where students can critically analyze #conservation organizations' websites? #teaching #environmentalanthropology #environmentalscience #biodiversity

Following the CDC's removal of critical health data and the potential approval of RFK Jr. as Health Secretary, it is crucial to access accurate health information from independent sources such as the WHO, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, and peer-reviewed journals.

"Many people—both policymakers and private citizens—seem to assume that economic growth will just continue as the planet heats up and the climate breaks down. But that belief is based on nothing—it’s a quasi-religious form of faith."

Climate Change Could Cut the Economy in Half. We’re Not Ready for It.
A new study suggests global warming’s effect on GDP has been vastly underestimated. Will it finally break through the religion of infinite growth?

Yes, as one of my friends and a young city of Seattle employee from the Department of Neighborhood said: this is the time to focus on the hyper local. Focus on our communities.
No matter what’s happening in Washington today — or in the next four years — our fight is local.

Now more than ever, we must make biking, walking, and riding the bus — the most affordable ways to get around — safe, efficient, and accessible for all.

The real cost of #LAfire is still unfolding. The LA fire was a stark reminder of the urgency of climate change, but also about the folly of suppressing the traditional use of fire ecology, unbridled construction, and the underfunding of emergency services. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/indi...
Indirect death toll from the L.A. fires may end up in the thousands » Yale Climate Connections
The toxic smoke from the fires, combined with disruption to the economy, health care system, and mental health may lead to thousands of deaths over the coming years.

A long and nuanced read that delves deep into the existential angst of many American voters.
New piece.

A long deep dive piece into the reasons beyond the punditry and headlines as to why Harris and Democrats as a whole failed in 2024.

I firmly believe this is about far more existential, psychological, and structural reasons than it has been depicted as. Here’s why.
The Deeper Reasons Democrats Lost
It wasn't just that Trump got more votes. It wasn't just that Harris had lower turnout. A deep dive into the psychological, existential, and systemic reasons Harris and Democrats didn't win in 2024.

Libraries as civic cathedrals!! I love it. I always thought of a library as a safe third place, a temple of knowledge, a home away from home. But this is a new one.
Seattle’s central library is magnificent. It’s our civic cathedral...our winter garden...our town square.

#climateanxiety is real. It is also something that I talk about while teaching 19 and 20 year olds about #climatechange as it is unfolding right here, right now. I also have a Tween who is a big fan of dystopian fiction. I am also curious to know if fiction can be a way to mitigate this anxiety.

Gorgon CCS is the world's largest pure carbon capture and storage operation. Since 2019, it has been weakly sputtering away out on Barrow Island at Australia's highest emitting industrial facility.

You may have heard it's a failure. Do you know why it's a failure?

When I teach my students about biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability discourses, I always remind them that 'science' has always been rooted in politics, economics, and social mores. It is a hard lesson to impart to my STEM students.
The British Medical Journal published big investigation last night into just how much medical research is sponsored by oil companies, or even just co-authored by their employees. It’s a lot.
