Every disturbing news report about a wrongful deportation or military-style raid of an apartment building should come as a reminder that the US government is using its prosecutorial discretion—it is choosing—to normalize casual cruelty and overt racism.
A year of hell for immigrants
In the first Trump administration, cruelty was the point. Now, it is the norm.

I haven't looked via my library yet, but has anyone done similar work on the California speed camera pilots? @calbike.bsky.social I know you are supporting a new bill on this right? Can you please point me to any evals you've seen? Working on a grant app related to speed, speeding, and attitudes
After NYC installed 2,000 speed cameras, crashes fell 30% and injuries 16%.

At our school (UCLA), we’re told we’re in a budget crisis. And yet central IT is out here buying licenses from OpenAI. As I told the person responsible, if anything, OpenAI should be paying US for beta testing their dangerous, flawed software.

Administrators are inking deals with OpenAI and inviting Palantir onto campus, ignoring faculty expertise and rolling out unproven data-thieving surveillance snake oil tech on our studens, staff and us. Enough.

Well this is disgusting
We know you’ve seen the designs for the 2026 America the Beautiful pass, aka the “national parks pass.” Gross, right? 🤢

Know what’s even more gross? Asking rangers to determine who is “American enough” to pay the lower cost to enter the parks.

This is not true. This is argument that pro-gun people use to discount red flag and waiting period laws. Ease of access and lethality (let alone cheerful instruction in the best method!) is the #1 predictor of attempts leading actual completion. The more barriers, the more people live.
I think it's fine Chat GPT is telling people how to kill themselves. They'll figure it out one way or another if they're serious.

Such an important story. It shows how, with an army of MAGA ditto-heads, Trump's evil intentions can permeate down from an executive order and a few appointments at a congressional agency to the state level, to court cases, and all the way into the bathroom at your workplace.
The EEOC, the main federal agency in charge of protecting American workers' rights, has abandoned trans, nonbinary, and other gender non-conforming workers, leaving them with little ability to get justice www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

The difference between the people Trump is turning on us from ICE vs the Nat Guard is that the Nat Guard signed a contract during very different times & are obligated to obey orders.

Those motherfuckers in ICE voluntarily chose THIS job, THIS year, precisely knowing it would demand violent cruelty.

Wrote this piece for @newrepublic.com with Professor Brandon Marshall about how the overdose crisis is driven by poverty and how harm reduction measures get the blame for larger structural problems they aren't designed to fix. We need economic populism and economic justice.
Collective members Professor Brandon Marshall and Abdullah Shihipar write about viewing the overdose crisis as one driven by material suffering and explain that pursuing economic justice can have a real impact in reducing overdose deaths.

The Populist Approach to the Opioid Crisis Can Save Millions of Lives
The overdose epidemic is often framed as a public health concern. But what if we treated it as an economic crisis, which policy can alleviate?

America does not have capital punishment for selling or smuggling drugs and none of these people were arrested or tried. There could have been mountains of cocaine in open view on the deck of the boats and it still would have been murder of unarmed civilians.
Rand Paul just posted this letter from the Coast Guard confirming that 1/4 of the boats they stop carry no contraband. The likelihood that Hegseth & Bradley ordered the murder of innocent civilians is very high.
