Let untold stories unfold in a “ghost nation” so paradoxical some say it doesn’t exist.

(Disclaimer: ghosts guaranteed for late August through mid-September travel only. Limit one spirit per tourist group. May not be combined with other offers.)
Pinned
Challenging terrain for an unguided western visitor, Taiwan brims with immersive experiences and shares the same energy as cultural neighbors Japan and Korea while allowing tourists to transcend the label and have genuine and unique interactions all in a safe, G7-development-level environment.

Taiwan has a population of about 23 million people.
But did you know that half of them live in these highlighted urban areas?

My mom thinks I show the ugly side of Taiwan when I photograph alleyways… what do you think?

Taiwan is full of 小巷 (alleyways) between buildings, creating their own little spaces for scooter parking and secret shortcuts through the city… I really enjoy them

Just lounging out at the top of what was once the world’s tallest building (2004 to 2010). Bonus points if you know what the giant yellow ball behind me in photo one is! 🌕

The express train running the length of Taiwan ran every 15 minutes. The one with more stops in the industrial center ran more often. A HSR leaving Taipei Main every 5 mins or less!
HSR (300 kph) runs on the west coastal plain. We also took the slower conventional train along the mountainous east

Kaohsiung road bike trip includes costal monkeys 🙈 with skyline sights like a hulking, at-times abandoned skyscraper that’s the second-tallest in Taiwan.
I really need to do this more often.

These people are also the reason why Taiwan has very cinematic-looking military photos like these

Taipei!

I’m ashamed to admit that I thought “street food” was basically a euphemism/term of art for non-gourmet food that might have once been served on the street but no longer is.

Taipei very much disabused me of this notion (and converted me to street-food maximalism) 1/

ateji annoy me so much. kaohsiung only has its name because the japanese colonial government replaced the siraya name "takao" (written 打狗 in taiwanese) with 高雄 - pronounced "takao" in japanese but with a completely different meaning, and a vastly different pronounciation in both taiwanese + mandarin

One of the invigorating aspects of my position is my work on the International Relations Committee.

I've built a relationship with the Taiwanese consulate, and had a wonderful opportunity to catch up with Mr. Paul Sun, Vice-Consul for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago.
