Day 317: Drawing another majestic creature before and after looking up a single reference photo: the mata mata
2-panel comic drawn in pen with crosshatch shading. The panels are stacked vertically and there's a top caption saying "Now that I've defeated capitalism (see yesterday's comic), time for another "animal un-familiar." Today is the mata mata. Panel 1 starts with two captions: "My instincts tell me it's some kind of bird or fish... no real idea though. Let's draw her with zero reference:" In the panel is a drawing of a pretty basic fish, with antennae (I don't know fish terminology and I'm fine with that) that resemble coral, and a gaping, round mouth. Captions written in cursive surround the drawing, saying "Salt-water? Mouth trapped in a constant scream to reflect the horrors of the deep? Another muppet?" Panel 2 has a single boxed caption, which i wrote after drawing the first panel and subsequently looking up what a mata mata actually looks like: "Okay, so i was very wrong." Below is a drawing of what essentially looks like a tortoise but with mountainous spikes on its shell, and a consierably long, thick neck that juts out and ends in a head that has a tiny, trumpet-shaped nose with little pig nostrils at the end. Cursive captions around the drawing say "*Fresh water, actually..." "I'm at a loss for words. Incredible, sharp creature." and "Gonna need a closeup on this face:" In the bottom corner of the panel is a small inset panel showing the mata mata's face closer up, showing its tiny pignose and hilarious wide grin that spans across its little dinosaur face. Beneath the comic is my signature (Kat Baumann), today's date (11-13-2025) and the time I spent drawing this (50 minutes)
