If you believe in reincarnation and that life begins at conception: I could be Elvis.
Human progress is based on intercity trade and expanded production capability. US cities died last century. Corporate ownership and taxes paying for infrastructure support the existing system that can only collapse. There is no way to vote out of this predicament. Find joy where you can. #JaneJacobs

You're stuck on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

For me, Morgan Freeman edges out Michael Caine. I still get the best Batman movies, but also Shawshank, Bruce Almighty, Robin Hood & the March of the Penguins.
Giancarlo Esposito.

Trading Places, King of New York, Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Bob Roberts, plus all of Homicide, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Boys, Mandalorian …
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

I named my fists "Les" and "Mis" because I will be the victor and hyou go away.
I named my fists Common and Sense because I'm about to bring the Paine
I named my fists Blood and Meridian because I’m fixing to Judge your ass.

Watching an episode of The Blacklist, and a woman is dead, and Red examines the body, and my brain immediately comes up with petechial hemorrhage. 3 minutes later they talk about it. What has TV done to us that I, who never enjoyed the anatomy part of biology class, can identify that? Weird.

Is there a Bluesky account to follow that fills you in on what the latest weird thing is going viral on here? The most popular topic is "Charlie Brown", but it seems to be movie quotes with "Charlie Brown" at the end and I need an explainer.

If you don't own at least 13 different sizes/types/brands of plastic container, you have failed as a suburban American consumer and you must go out to your nearest Big Box immediately for penance. If yours all have matching lids you must buy twice as many immediately.

Alexander Hamilton and Andrew Jackson.
If I gave you a magic button that would erase the entire existence any two American public figures, which would you choose. Quote-reply to this post with your choices.

In the Federalist Papers, Madison/Hamilton/Jay tried to allay fears that a large republic would allow an ambitious man to become a tyrant, with checks and balances among the divisions of government to curb ambition.
If resurrected, what would they think of today's dumpster fire? Too big a republic?

This was my problem with Raya and the Last Dragon--the lesson was that you should bend over for anyone who wants to fuck you over in the hopes that it somehow ends up better in the end.
Un-fucking-believable.

Really? Room in the tent? Holy shit, this is not reaching across the aisle, this is fucking NAIVE.

She's literally a white supremacist, come the fuck on, how is it that your morals are this flexible for her, but Mamdani is too progressive?!
Raskin: We are a big tent. We must be a huge, vast tent. I say this is a party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over.

Well, the good news is that with the shutdown ending, our Democrats in both houses can get back to... ... wait, I know this one... don't tell me...
Seriously, I can get this. I know there is something they do, right? There has to be.
Can't just get elected to gladhand lobbyists and donors all day...

Sitting in an airport as our flight gets further and further delayed, wondering when the Trump administration will awake to the awfulness of its policies. Will it happen? Will they lose power without ever figuring it out? Would they even care? What was Hitler thinking the day before he copped out?

'Up-to-date' headline: "Mamdani and Cuomo lead race."
In our next breaking story, we will find out whether or not water is, in fact, wet.

When Gorka says we have a Judeo-Christian society instead of Greek, I assume it's because he wants to downplay democracy. But reading Aristotle's Politics about how many wars were started because of quarrels between gay lovers, maybe they want to erase the history of gays having political power.

Finally! For years I've had this musical phrase that I repeat over and over. Du-duh duddle-ut-dah daduddle-a duddle-a duddle-a duddle-a du-duh duddle-ut-dah deedley deedley deedley deedley du-duh duddle-ut-dah...
Finally figured out it's the first guitar solo from Reeling in the Years by Steely Dan.

I enjoy these pleasant surprises in used books: artifacts of previous use. 35 years ago, Steve in Edmonton, Alberta, bought this and 3 other books. The book was 9 years old at the time. It cost $5 Canadian. That was $7.36 in modern US dollars. I paid $14.88, so it has doubled in value, sort of.

In college, we had a bottle of Absolut Kurant no one wanted, even underage kids desperate for alcohol.
Some things just don't get traction.
Since this was an SEC football school 20+ years ago, many of those who declined have since voted for Trump 3 times.
