Can't make the vaccine case much clearer than measles. Just 5% of infections in Canada are people with the recommended 2 doses. Get all your shots, wear a mask and clean your air folks, this won't get any easier.

À propos de rien en particulier, I wonder how much overlap there is between “I have to lock my small kids in their rooms for their safety” and “my teenager is not allowed to lock their bedroom door”.

It is hard to explain to people from the US how much of my Remembrance Day experience growing up taught the lesson “war is shit.” I don’t wear a poppy to glorify war! I wear it to remind myself that war is shit, even when it is (or seems) necessary.

This! The actual work people do in factories is largely not fun, interesting, or stimulating in itself, and a lot of it is dangerous. What made those jobs good was the pay, the labour rights, and the purchasing power that most of us in ANY kind of job can no longer expect.
It's one of the things I think folks struggle with is that you're not actually nostalgic for an era of factory work, you're nostalgic for an era of union jobs, massive-scale construction of affordable housing, and mass immigration

Just ate a Subway sandwich outside at Vaughan Cortelucci hospital, which was fine except for the volunteer who walked by and told me it was too cold to eat outside. First of all it’s 5C, so … no?!? Second of all it’s a HOSPITAL, the N95 is staying ON 🤦🏻‍♀️

Currently proofreading a textbook chapter about gaming (the kind that includes lotteries, casinos, and sports betting, not the D&D or PS5 kind), which means lots of clicking on links to gambling-related websites to check sources. The Algorithm is gonna be So Confused 🤣

I am the opposite of surprised by this—it’s a continuation of the long-standing French attitude towards Canadian French(es), but with bonus racism 🤢

Faites mieux les Français, câlisse.
The Ivory Coast is changing the way French is spoken and France is mad about it.

A while back I was talking to someone at the IRS about a document CRA wanted. Could it be emailed? No. But she could fax it if I gave her my fax number! I said I didn't have a fax number, and when she asked why not, I lost control of my mouth and said "because it's 2018!"

... she was not amused.
"No, I don't have a fax machine. I also don't have polio or a trained falcon"

when these rules actually come out, they will be open for public comment and all of us need to flood submissions, call our reps, make noise, everything including the kitchen sink

So true! And YMMV, but the Buy Nothing group in my area is also a go-to place for news about local community fridges and pantries, as well as "curb alert" posts when someone spots an item discarded on the curb that they don't need but someone else might (furniture, usually).
BuyNothing is great, and may also be Freecycle in your area. Been able to give craft supplies to a public schoolteacher, Christmas decorations to a divorcee & kids who had nothing, etc. When someone asks for items, the community will almost always swoop in. www.freecycle.org

Step 1: Wipe a bunch of red ink off the nib of a leaky pen

Step 2: Put pen wiper in a bowl of water to soak

Step 3: Forget you did that

Step 4: JUMP SCARE

To all those “Let them go without food for a month, maybe they’ll get a job” people: Most SNAP recipients have jobs. Exploitative jobs that keep them living just below the poverty line. — Should they starve to death? And then what?

LOOK AT THIS.
"Tzefardea Tzedek" (Frog of Righteousness)

As soon as the Portland Frog became a meme, Jewish social media blew up with jokes about the 2nd Passover plague - tzefarde'a (frogs) - and the Rabbinical commentary around it. I knew I had to make a calligraphy piece encompassing all of it. (more in alt.)

This is small and petty but I do kind of think there should be some kind of penalty for writing a recipe that makes 14, 15, or 16 muffins. If you publish a cookbook that does all three of those? There is something the matter with you.
