The deployment of “ai” is not a case study in diffusion of innovation or adoption of new technology. It is a case study in coerced implementation, it is social engineering by the elite class and it’s bad for people and bad for the planet

Republicans want to kill the post office and the media is there for it, which is why you have never seen a news story about how the police department has never turned a profit and is a waste

Youngest really wanted a snowy Christmas. She got that. I should make her shovel the driveway. . .

Nah. She’s decided to make Christmas breakfast, so she deserves a snowy landscape out on which to gaze.

The girls wanted steak for Christmas Eve dinner. Out on the deck, BBQing in snow up past my ankles.

Worth it.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, much love to everybody else. I wish you all can find some spot of joy. You all deserve it.

Be nice to your postie at Christmas, they are doing a job you would probably find too difficult. 🙏
Only abused by two members of the public yesterday as I delivered their parcels. And called a C**t because I had stopped outside a house to deliver letters. But (I try to keep this in the front of my mind) most people are lovely and polite.

In all sincerity I often sit here and wonder how better people could have given warnings about the rise of global fascism, and I struggle to think what else could have been tried. There were subtle warnings and loud warnings, obnoxious warnings and gentle warnings, the full range. I just don't know.
I keep thinking about this. I was talking to a journalist friend about Project 2025, and he was saying how so much of it is being executed with frightening efficiency. And it is all the more frustrating because everyone with the power to stop it was so thoroughly and repeatedly warned.
I mean I think the people who underestimated the fascists are the stupids in this equation. The fascists had a 60 year plan, they documented the last year of it very publicly, and they are successfully implementing all of it.

*laughs in archivist* anyone who thinks it's all been digitized is out of their goddamn mind. We don't have the staff, resources, or digital infrastructure to digitize, store, check, and maintain at preservations standards a digital copy of every single item in our collections.
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
Seems like it's worth posting this one again.

I do think this is true. I'm often guilty myself of underplaying what the work I do looks like or how much time and effort it takes. Research isn't 'just reading' or a question of sucking up summaries others have created. It's knowledge creation.

So let me go through the process with an example 1/
What historians (and other scholars do) is create knowledge. We should use that phrase more and talk about what it means. I think we don't, and it's part of why AI enthusiasts are confused when we don't readily agree that our work can be replicated/replaced by their products.

The real task for me as a teacher (and human being) is to make sure that I keep my eyes on the real villain in the whole AI debacle--capital and its captains.

It is not my students.

And I won't let this mess turn me into a cop.

genAI is STOLEN WORK. Using genAI in *any* capacity is trafficking in stolen work, supporting the plunder. Period. These facts aren't even denied by the AI companies, they just find ways to make that plunder seem benevolent. Using their product enables that lie. Stop enabling the theft of our work.
"we only use AI for coming up with ideas" no you don't. you use AI to come up with the a bland version of other people's ideas. there is currently NOBODY more replaceable than you

Admiral Yi Sun Sin—generally ranked as one the greatest naval commanders of history, alongside Nelson—failed his first attempt at the military exam and scored 12th out of 28th when he did pass—a level C officer.

Just might be a lesson there about the criteria of others and your own potential.
