Are we getting a Philadelphia/New Jersey version for the games here? hmm "Philadelphia, New Jersey" does have a certain ring to it
Finally: The perfect shirt to wear to World Cup matches at New York New Jersey Stadium this summer

Can't stop laughing about Action News going to South Philly's beloved Taco Heart and putting this on the footage

Top right corner. Can't help but wonder if The Simpsons paid subtle tribute to Dan McQuade in tonight's set-in-Philadelphia 800th episode.

I regret not getting the opportunity to know Dan better- we recently connected bc he was to write ab our ep where the Simpsons visit Philly, &he reminded me that we had actually crossed paths in HS! His passing is a tremendous loss. I dedicate the episode to him.

Dan McQuade, award-winning writer, tireless community activist, and ‘Philadelphia institution,’ has died at 43
Often irreverent, always inventive, he filed memorable stories about the Wildwood T-shirt scene, Wawa hoagies, the Philly accent, and other cool stuff. His stories sparkled with research and humor.

Good story on FIRE in the Inquirer that covers how they still care about free speech when it comes for woke and why there's skepticism towards them on the left www.inquirer.com/news/a/fire-...
How FIRE, a Philly-based free-speech group, went from ‘cancel culture’ watchdog to Trump antagonist
FIRE built its reputation policing cancel culture. Now the free-speech group is confronting the Trump administration.

I got into it a little over dinner a couple months ago with Jason's (very nice) old friends who live in Noe Valley and like Newsom and I said something like "I don't think he's much better than, say, George W," and they were RILED.

I get irrationally annoyed by "midnight ballerina" probably because to me it sounds like something a corny manager would have coined...someone tell the dancers about "being a model in the shoe show" or "ecdysiast"

😏
This is an unapologetically sappy feel-good subject (at least, I guess, for people in a happy relationship”). So, to prepare for Valentine’s Day, what did you and your partner do for a first date?

My wife and I went to tea at Huntington Gardens and walked around.
On our first date, my spouse and I spent like an hour talking about footnotes.

It's really something that I've lived in the places with the best summer (Portland/Pacific Northwest) and the worst summer (Austin/Texas), and now the places with the best winter (Montana/the Rockies) and the worst winter (Philly/an East Coast city)

I'd be less pissed off about the state of the city in regards to transit and the conditions for walking if I hadn't seen how quickly everything got done for the Super Bowl parade last year

A couple of us at the magazine were just talking about this. Dan wrote funny blogs, yes, but he also literally changed the course of conversation for an American icon.
As @jenniferkates.bsky.social reminds me, it was Dan McQuade who was at Hannibal Burress's October 2014 show at the Troc when he said “You rape women, Bill Cosby,” happened to be recording it, made it go viral, and from then on no one ever could forget or deny who Bill Cosby was.
Hannibal Buress on Bill Cosby: 'You're a Rapist'
Comedian Hannibal Buress called Bill Cosby a rapist in a bit at the Trocadero on Thursday night. Cosby has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

I know I’m a homer but this was the most quintessentially McQuade story. Perfect idea, perfect execution. Dan was the only person on Earth who could’ve written this.

Not to get all conspiracy-minded about the Streets Dept., but if *my* union got bullied by the mayor during a strike this summer, I would not expect to see its members rushing around after the next big snowstorm
2 1/2 full days after the storm ended and these blocks still haven’t seen a single plow. This was all within a two-minute walk in Pennsport.
