Debbie Berne was the only person ever to succeed in convincing me to read David Foster Wallace, and although I hadn't seen her since shortly after she left Green Apple, I think of her with genuine fondness every time the phrase "a supposedly fun thing I'll never do again" pops into my head. Sad news
We just learned that book designer Debbie Berne died at the end of 2025. Debbie was bright and funny with a keen eye for design. She was also a former Green Apple bookseller that we held in the highest of esteem. Sending our condolences to those who loved her most ❤️🍏

Please buy books that are coming out this year.

Doesn’t have to be mine. But there is a stellar release calendar this year especially of Black writers and it would be a shame if one of the fascist victories was people not buying those books (from the indies that are in the fight with us). #BookSky

MLK Jr insisted that what affects any one of us will affect all of us. His understanding of the “network of mutuality” that sustains us all is an essential lesson for this fraught moment in the US, I argue in a new op-ed for the Guardian.
