So, it’s really common to hear farmers and ranchers get upset about labels on food, like GMO free or antibiotic free or grass fed, etc. on the grounds that the labels are misleading.

As for myself, I couldn’t care less. I just want to get paid fairly and produce the product I’m being paid for well

I keep going to cattle business related events hoping to learn something new.

I’m not an especially well connected or well informed cattleman- but you wouldn’t believe how rarely anyone shares new information with me.

It’s just the same dozen or so points over and over and over again.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but, in a western Canadian context, at least, “Grassroots” just means conservative/right wing.

Update: I’m now trying to explain to this friend that one poll showing that up to 3 in 10 Albertans supporting separation does not equal “more than 1/3 of Albertans in favour of independence.”

I shouldn’t HAVE to have this conversation…
I’ve got a friend upset with me for comparing Alberta separatism in Canada to Donbas separatism in Ukraine. He’s tells me they’re not the same at all.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainians we both know are saying “yes, these two things are basically the same.”

My favourite genre of human being is people who accuse you of virtue signalling and then are all like, “so there I was, giving alms to the poor and waiting for my turn in the confessional….”

I already knew that Saint Olga of Kyiv was my distant ancestor many times over (she shows up as ancestor to all my grandparents) but today I learned that she’s considered to be the patron saint of vengeance.

Which is probably canonically dodgy, but a fun idea all the same.

Virtual fencing for cattle seems like a pretty good idea (building fence is slow and expensive, and it litters the countryside with fence lines).

But it doesn’t look very cool. Poor cows, looking all dorky with their clunky zap collars…

Listening to a guy talk about cattle prices and the risk of prices dropping.

He shares the opinion that US and Canada will always have high-ish cattle prices because South America can’t produce high-grade beef.

And I think that attitude is going to get our asses handed to us.

I’ve got people in my social media looking at stuff going on in the US right now and saying things like “I still prefer it to China” and I just…I dunno dude… feel like that’s how you end up dismissing atrocities.

And that’s ignoring the faint whiff of implied racism and prejudice…

People are right to be incensed, but there are more names to uplift. ICE killed an immigrant man named Silverio Villegas González in Chicagoland. He had children. Victor Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Minneapolis and died in ICE custody on January 14. Their names deserve to be repeated, too.

I want to take a trip.

Just me.

Spend a week in Peru. In Pucallpa. In the jungle. No special reason. I just want to.

I have no idea how to pull it off.
(Mostly because I don’t feel comfortable asking anyone for…anything.)
