I saw both movies at a sleepover with a friend whose parents allowed us to rot our brains with whatever we wanted when I was about 14. I assumed exactly this and it's still my head canon.
the explanations for how Evil Dead 2 is remake instead of a sequel ignore how the funniest / most in character possible option is that Ash just went back to the cabin a second time.

A 30-year quest is nearly over. I'll post more about this on Friday, but - I've been collecting a small, relatively unknown CCG since 1995 and if it comes in Friday's mail, I'll have the final card I need for a complete set!
