Trump’s proposed $23 billion in cuts to NIH & NSF could cost the U.S. economy at least $10 billion a year, according to new research. Public science funding drives innovation, productivity, and long-term growth. Slashing it isn’t saving money; it’s losing our future. www.forbes.com/sites/johndr...

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl.

can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

With all this talk about cutting the NIH, might I remind everyone that the entire NIH budget is less than 5% of the DoD budget.

The NIH is so efficient that they already rely upon volunteer labor to do grant review. And they are not even allowed to buy grant reviewers coffee.

🤬
Take home messages:

1) High-tier journals preferentially accept papers by white men. They should stop!

It's wrong (even if unintentional) & also those papers tend to underperform.

2) The rest of us, stop relying on journal names - use article-level metrics if at all & recall they're also biased

I saw so many viral posts about Katalin Karikó from men and while it's fine (and she deserves all the praise), I can't help but think men shouldn't wait to support women colleagues until after women don't need their support anymore. You can actually make a difference elsewhere. Perhaps for every 5
