Posting tonight about great city-making books made me realize, to my shock, that I never posted about the deeply sad death this year of one of the greatest urbanists who ever lived— Allan Jacobs. Jake was a big hero of mine in my early life, who became an advisor & friend later on. A GREAT man. #RIP

Can’t get enough of this! While Tokyo cuts down trees and paves over open spaces, Paris is pedestrianising the city and making it greener for everyone. This is what real climate leadership looks like. Thanks for the inspiration @annehidalgo.bsky.social !

Seriously, what else was I going to do on my first day here in Rome except inventory piazzas?
My simplistic assessment?
Most either had too many tourists (I know, hypocritical), or if less well known, too many vehicles. Most had too little seating, too many ugly fences, too many building ads…

Drives me nuts that things like bike lanes get painted as luxury goods or harbingers of gentrification when making it easy and convenient to get around your city by bike could save low-income households thousands of dollars a year.
One of the less discussed harms of car-centric planning is that it imposes a serious financial burden on working families. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/20/b...

The Gare d’Orsay was used as a parking garage for decades before it became a museum.
We often assume the places we love in cities were “always that way.” But even in European cities, cars got in the way for decades. Torino’s Piazza San Carlo was a parking lot from the 1970s until 2005, when it was made a people place again for the 2006 Winter Olympics. HT @modacitylife.com for pics.

“Many cities had to claim these places back from cars.”
You can judge any city by the quality and vitality of its places for public life. Here in Torino Italy it’s the many piazzas, the pedestrian streets, & the public market. Many cities had to claim these places back from cars.
Don’t have those kinds of places in your city? Are you sure you’re a city?

Study after study shows that it's remarkably cheap and easy to solve the problems of homelessness and poverty with low-barrier supportive housing and universal basic income, but our own fear that someone, somewhere will get something they didn't "earn" keeps us looking for other (punitive) options.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
