I worry that people are relying too heavily on the fact that all this is unpopular in the polls. Most autocrats are unpopular with their people. Once you control every branch of government, muzzle the press, and start murdering your own citizens with impunity, you don't need to be popular.

Happy Birthday, Miyazaki sensei!
In honor of Hayao Miyazaki's birthday, what's your favorite Studio Ghibli film? Doesn't have to be the one you think is "the best," just the one that nestled in your heart. Mine is Howl's Moving Castle.

If you, like me, woke up to the news about The US military abducting the president of Venezuela, you probably had more questions after your fully justified "WHAT THE FUCK??"

As God is my witness, I thought this was a joke.

Setting aside all the Hunger Games associations (Not to mention--who's going to give the winning teenage girl her prize? Ew.) "The Patriot Game" was a song from the Irish nationalist movement. Its theme was basically "Nationalism sucks."
Donald Trump just announced the creation of the “Patriot Games,” an “unprecedented four-day athletic event” with “one young man and one young woman from each state and territory.”

A Pep Guardiola quote has been knocking around in my brain recently. On its face it applies only to futbol, but it feels like something we could all put to use at this moment in history, when our actions count for so much. "We do not pass to move the ball. We pass to move the opposition."

Just finished ep 4 of #pluribus . I'm struck how much of these first episodes has been just--grief. I watch Carol and I think "Yeah, been there, done that."

RE: James Bond

Seriously, I'm not clear about all the confusion here. It's been a while since I've Bonded, but isn't the name James Bond something that's given, like the double-oh agent number? That's how we can have stories about agent James Bond going back 7 decades, isn't it?
