Student: Teacher, why do we learn?

Socrates: For life!

Freire: For liberation!

Dewey: For democracy!

Neoliberal EduWonks: To mitigate overhead costs for employers and increase future projections of GDP!
It’s really absurd that we’ve reached a point where the “common sense” view of education is that its primary purpose is to lower the future onboarding/training costs for companies hiring new employees.

So you’re saying we could solve all the financial problems of 379 million of us and impact just 19 households. What an interesting fact. Fun little bit of trivia.
The 19 richest U.S. households saw a $1 trillion wealth increase in 2024, a rise that exceeds the size of Switzerland’s economy.

These 19 households now control $2.6 trillion in wealth — almost as much wealth as the bottom 50% of American households.

If this isn't an oligarchy, what is?

If you're 60, 69.1% of all job growth since your birth occurred under Democratic administrations.

If you're 45, that number is 74.7%.

If you're under 30, the number is 100%.

For no real reason, here’s Charles Lindbergh in 1941 saying US shouldn’t assist the UK’s war with Germany because country should 1) prioritize America First interests, 2) avoid European entanglements, 3) push for peace, and 4) recognize it’s an unfair deal for us.

This is Winston Churchill visiting Washington DC to request assistance in the war against Germany. Notice he is wearing a "zip suit" and not a traditional suit. This was to honor the British troops--the same reason Zelensky dresses the way he does.

So many great Schoolhouse Rock songs. “Conjunction Junction.” “I’m Just a Bill.” Lately this one has been on my mind.

Misinfo: bad information.
Disinfo: bad information circulated in order to bring about specific goals (the "d" is for "deliberate," I like to say)
Counter misinfo: fact-checking
Counter disinfo: debunking; is highly public, often confrontational, can appear very partisan, and makes you sound nuts
Gestures vaguely at @brooklynmarie.bsky.social to beg for another breakdown of misinformation vs disinformation and the 'counter' versions of each. I want to make an info graphic of this. Feels like a 4 circle venn though 😮‍💨
This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

Out this morning: a short piece in #TheConversation about #sportswriting, #sportsjournalism, and #storylines, focusing on Notre Dame, Army, Grantland Rice, and the Four Horsemen.

Grantland Rice, the Four Horsemen and the blowout that never was
Generations of sportswriters have been inspired by Rice’s penchant for drama and flair. But the spectacular can obfuscate the real, more interesting stories taking place on and off the field.

Army won that game in 1958, but has lost the next fifteen to the Irish.

High time for an upset? Or will ND continue their streak?

When #6 Notre Dame plays #18 Army on Saturday, it will be the first time in 66 years that both teams are ranked when they meet.
