Greetings, BlueSky. Who am I and why am I here? Short version: I'm an American thriller novelist with a lifelong interest in the culture and history of the Middle East, a former conservative who has been politically homeless for nearly a decade, and who prefers his social media with fewer Nazis.

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them

ME: you want anything
VIZIER: [chuckles] what i want is of no import

Written from inside a dark, freezing #Kyiv, POLITICO’s Ukraine correspondent Veronika Melkozerova’s "Survival guide to the Kremlin’s winter of terror in Kyiv" is painfully literal (link below).

Kyiv is enduring one of its harshest winters since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

On January 29, 🇺🇦Ukraine honors the memory of the Heroes of Kruty — young men who in 1918 stood up for Ukrainian statehood, fighting against an overwhelming enemy force and sacrificing their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine
The struggle continues.
And now its outcome is in our hands!

It's 410 CE, and I'm your podcast host, Rossus Douthaticus. I'm here with Alaric the Visigoth, who recently sacked the Eternal City.

Alaric, why do you think people have lost faith in Rome? Is it a crisis of liberalism? Is it because of the feminization of the workplace?

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Saw a post earlier about how these "defenders of Western civ" rarely read the foundational texts they claim to defend--reminded me of a conversation with a conservative blogger a few years back, where I asked her essentially that: "What have you read from these 'Great Books' you advocate?" 1/3

Holy shit, there's an open carry #2A protest of ICE happening in Douglas County Colorado -- a very wealthy and very red suburb county of Denver. (I lived there for 16 years.) The Trump Administration pissing off committed gun owners sufficiently for them to join the protests against ICE is wild.

It really says a lot about the caliber of people in this administration that they're replacing Hugo Boss cosplay dude with the subject of a bribery investigation.

Well, it certainly looks like 2026 is going to be the year where the President's old "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody" boast gets fully test driven.

Cue Casablanca: "We haven't quite decided yet whether he committed suicide or died trying to escape."
I grew up hearing stories from my father about how folks abducted by Franco’s secret police would routinely “escape” to the roof of police HQ and “commit suicide.” The obviousness of the lie was itself an intimidation tactic.
"agents told hospital staff that Castaneda Mondragon ... 'purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.'”
