its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but @thekrebscycle.bsky.social, as the first director of CISA and an outspoken truth teller in the years since then, has done incredibly important work for the cybersecurity community and the country. Pretty much the definition of a “good faith actor.”
Trump signed a memorandum Wednesday declaring former CISA leader Chris Krebs a “significant bad-faith actor who weaponized and abused his government authority.” Krebs debunked baseless claims of 2020 election fraud, for which Trump fired him. cyberscoop.com/trump-chris-...

Remember this every time you see another headline on the NIH funding cuts.

A team of archivists has recreated the pre-Trump CDC website as a live, easy-to-navigate website that should be indexed by Google. The team is hosting it in Europe. Cool project that is sadly necessary:

I can’t get over the fact that two separate people did Nazi salutes at CPAC and it’s so normalized at this point that it’s barely even notable on TV news. In any halfway normal era that shit would warrant wall-to-wall coverage.

DOGE’s accounting of its “savings” is riddled with sloppy mistakes. The five largest cuts that it listed on its website earlier this week were all incorrect — making the savings look far larger than they were in reality.
