another thing my dad decide to pick up: he knew my mom had been writing letters to my cousin's oldest kid who is out in california for college (and possibly forever). he's decided to keep writing letters, and intends to send him one or two books with each letter

I quilted the layers of the brim together and it did get much stiffer. I'm going to bind the edge—I already sewed up the seam on the point lining, plus I also quilted that, so I figured I'd try bias binding for the first time.

my most petty christmas sadness this year is that my dad decided to ignore all the adults entirely and only buy for kids. which is fine and right! but my mom would get us all a few little things and i always loved everything she gave me

soul asylum was asked to make a christmas song for a record to benefit teens in need. i’ve always been very cynical about writing christmas songs, but i accepted the challenge because i thought the cause was good. i also saw it as an opportunity for me to address the gun problem in america. however, it wasn’t what the people who were making the benefit record were looking for, and “morgan’s dog” was not included on the christmas album.
around this time morgan spurlock was producing a documentary series for cnn called inside man. i love documentaries and proper investigative reporting, and i think morgan spurlock is brilliant. in one of the first episodes, he shows how easy it is to get a gun in america. he starts out talking about how his dad gave him a gun when he was a kid, and he shot his own dog by accident — i may have embellished that or mixed it up to make it work for the song.
