This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

We will never be able to put our country back together until we prosecute those who are breaking the law multiple times a day. It’s what should have happened four years ago and it is a huge part of the reason we are in this mess today.

Something has changed deep down in the informational structure of American society and frankly it feels like our political thinkers don’t want to acknowledge it so they constantly retreat to this idea it can be solved with snappier campaign slogans - better branding and it’s 1997 again.

There’s a specific mechanism in authoritarian movements that we’re seeing play out in real-time across American media and tech. It’s a simple rule: "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it."

It is the logic of "scorched earth." It's the logic of the Nero Decree and it's happening right now. 🧵

Today, I spoke with Kilmar Abrego Garcia and his wife, Jennifer. In April, when I met with him in El Salvador, Trump said he would never set foot in the U.S. again.

This case has never been about one man alone; if the govt can violate the constitutional rights of one, all our rights are threatened.

In my eyes, the true litmus test for Dem candidates is "do you understand the structural issues we are facing?" If they don't anything else they stand for is an empty promise that will be dashed on the rocks by SCOTUS and hostile oligarchs. We need someone clear eyed and ready to fight for reform.

It’s really atrocious how they threw the full force of the federal government at this one guy because he embarrassed them by being innocent of everything except trying to live his life.

Only one of many, unfortunately. But he got publicity so he had to be destroyed.
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Fiasco for Trump as Judge Issues Harsh Rebuke in Abrego Garcia Case
Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

"The jury verdict from 10 years ago contains a scrivener's error insofar as it states that the defendant was not guilty. We are changing that, nunc pro tunc, to guilty."

Yeah, no.
It is not! A “scrivener’s error” is for things like fixing typos or very minor non-material errors, not retroactively adding a deportation order that doesn’t current exist!
Is "correcting" a previous order like this a real thing?

In the last few weeks, I’ve become increasingly convinced that Trump and his regime are totally cooked.

They can only stay in power by stealing elections—but they can only do that if enough people are willing to help them.

They’re in a downward spiral and can’t pull themselves out of it.

This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…

This is such a stunning example of how far we’ve fallen. In his first term, he said this in a private meeting, it was front-page news everywhere, he denied saying it, Republicans criticized him.

Now he repeats it in front of cheering rally crowd, nobody blinks, it’s not even reported in the news.

Trump’s obsession with me is beyond weird. He needs serious help.

Since he has no economic policies to tout, he’s resorting to regurgitating bigoted lies instead.

He continues to be a national embarrassment.
Trump: "Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is. With her little turban. I love her. She comes in, does nothing but bitch ... we ought to get her the hell out ... she's here illegally."

The crowd in Pennsylvania then starts chanting "send her back!"
