I'd be curious to read more about Maria Corina Machado, who seems to be a dubious Nobel Peace Prize pick, especially given how recently it's been awarded...

Scientific funding is a net negative: "European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained"

Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding
With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

The logic that connects my research: showing that ideas are not free floating and that they relate to real things happening in the world, to people who are no necessarily producing those ideas, whether this is in philosophy, economics or literature.

Sincerely hope my supervisor, mentor and examiners think the same, because the job market is not improving...
Happy and frankly privileged to do it, but:

Y a-t-il des travaux sur la transformation du métier de conseiller bancaire ? Il y a l'exemple célèbre de Bessen sur cmt les distributeurs de billets n'ont pas supprimé d'emplois chez les guichetiers, car ils sont devenus conseillers. Mais il s'arrête en 2015... Il y a des choses nouvelles ? 🤔🤔

I'm not surprised he's French and I'm not surprised he's a dude. This is the symptom of everything that is wrong in French academia where your worthiness is measured in: 1. how critical and (violently) negative you are about your colleagues' work, 2. how many pages you can write.
An academic disliked an Oxford Very Short Introduction (145 pages) in his field so much that he wrote a 200 page book review attacking it. www.pierre-legrand.com/ewExternalFi...

A positive experience with research applications today: it appears that more research bodies and units are questioning quantity-driven publications and are changing the way they evaluate academic relevance 👏

Speakers of French: the professional categorie of "cadre" I find tricky to translate. I'd say that this could be translated as the professional managerial class, but this feels anachronistic. What do you do?
