I’ve seen more live music in the last 3 weeks than I have literally seen in the last 10 years. Loved every minute of it.

...as those have been produced by Disney Animation Television rather than Pixar themselves. While Wikipedia cites that Pixar was involved in the latter, it was more with animating that show's intro.

Given that you got re-subscribed to Disney Plus, considered adding the streaming shows, Win or Lose and Dream Productions, to the Pixar binge? I don't think Monsters at Work, the sequel series to Monsters Inc, and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command would count...

Anyway, I hope ELIO does well because it's good, and Pixar badly needs a win that isn't a title with a number appended to the end of it, but it also feels like we're in a place where even if ELIO does well, it will only justify Disney's meddling. A real lose-lose.

Short of a major executive shakeup at Disney, I don't know how Pixar pulls themselves out of this. It doesn't feel – as some have suggested – like a studio that's lost their creative voice, but rather a creative voice that is being stifled by upper management. I imagine it must be demoralizing.

It really feels at this point like Disney's corporate meddling is an anchor weighing Pixar down from achieving their full potential. Kneecapping LUCA and TURNING RED by sending them to streaming, forcing cuts to obfuscate the trans storyline in the otherwise excellent WIN OR LOSE, and now this.

Caught ELIO last night, which is generally pleasant, but feels distinctly like a movie that changed hands. As I understand it, Adrian Molina had a rough go of things and had to step away, but it also seems like Disney got skittish over some of the original themes the film was playing with.

Kai’s a very special character to me and I’m glad I got to be a part of her journey and work alongside a very special crew!

Back in 2021 I was invited to do some freelance on Kai’s episode of Pixar’s Win or Lose!

Kai’s character had gone through many iterations, but a constant theme of her story was the love she received from both her biological and softball family.

But the studio’s constant refusal to move forward with LGBTQ representation despite so many people within it clearly wanting to for no other reason than fear of how Disney MIGHT react is honestly really disappointing.

I love Pixar. I’ve always loved Pixar and I think the studio has been more on the right track in recent years than most people give them credit for. I think their recent films have been good to great. A couple of them are among my favorites.

On top of all this, the existence of PixPRIDE within the studio clearly indicates that people in leadership roles WANT LGBTQ inclusion at least on some level.

And yet, they refuse to follow through because the one time Disney let them do it, the movie bombed for entirely unrelated reasons.

Sure, more right-wing dipshits would’ve yelled at that, but especially with how many people are fighting back against the Ironheart review bombing, I feel there’s a good chance the genuine audience would outnumber them.

And Elio, a genuinely good movie, is bombing largely because barely anyone knew it existed before it released. Having a queer lead who loves bizarre fashion and art and has a male crush, WOULD HAVE created immediate conversations around the film.

And yeah, things worked out just fine for those first two (way more than fine for Inside Out 2), but Win or Lose is by all accounts a great show that lost huge swaths of its potential audience that would’ve sung its praises to the moon and back for its trans inclusion that is just gone now.

The queer erasure especially feels like the studio shooting itself in the foot.

We know now of at least four Pixar projects (Luca, Inside Out 2, Win or Lose, Elio) with cut queer themes/characters in spite of how many writers & artists in the studio are pushing for them and ADORING initial results.

So I genuinely really liked Elio and hope more people go see it than have been but…… this seems bad.
Pixar changed the plot of ‘ELIO’ after the original cut was test screened and not a single person raised their hand when asked if they’d pay to see the film in theaters.

Elio was also initially a queer-coded character until leadership told the team to make him more masculine.
